Under-21s in action at Fleetwood

Tuesday 18 October 2022 09:43

Manchester United wrap up our Papa Johns Trophy group-stage schedule with a trip to Fleetwood Town tonight (Tuesday).

The young Reds take on the League One side at Highbury Stadium in a 19:45 BST kick-off, looking to extend a 100 per cent record in this term's competition.

A 2-1 win at Carlisle United was followed by a dramatic victory by the same scoreline against Barrow, courtesy of Alejandro Garnacho's injury-time strike.

Watch the key moments from our second Papa Johns Trophy tie, including an injury-time winner...

Travis Binnion's side are already guaranteed qualification from Northern Group G, as we top the table with six points, four clear of each of the other three sides in the section.

It could mean a chance to blood some fresh faces and offer fabulous experience of senior football, in a testing environment, depending on how Binnion and the coaching team approach the tie.

United are the only Premier League club to currently head the groups, emphasising how difficult these fixtures are for young players still learning their trade.

Kobbie Mainoo made the senior bench for the first time in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle United last weekend, while Charlie McNeill came off the bench for a first-team debut earlier this term, in the Champions League clash with Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.

Garnacho has regularly been around Erik ten Hag's squad and posed for a picture next to the shield marking his Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award at Carrington last Friday. It will be interesting to see if the Argentina Under-20 international features again at this level, with a top-flight showdown with Spurs taking place on Wednesday night.

Facundo Pellistri also enjoyed some game-time in the win at Barrow, after his recovery from an injury suffered in the pre-season campaign.

The match cannot be shown live on MUTV but we will be publishing highlights on our official club channels on Wednesday morning.

Reds supporters keen to cheer the youngsters on this evening can buy tickets on a first-come, first-served basis.
