Everyone is talking about Cavani's first United start

Edinson Cavani may not have scored on Tuesday night, but the Uruguayan’s performance against Istanbul Basaksehir is earning rave reviews from Manchester United fans on social media.

'El Matador' made his first start for the club as part of a mouth-watering front-three alongside Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, helping to earn a 4-1 Champions League victory.

The 33-year-old spearheaded the attack and showed all of his experience as a world-class no.9, acting as a focal point for our interchanging midfielders and frequently playing intelligent one-two passes, particularly in the first half when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reds produced a mesmerising display.

Cavani had three shots at goal and was unfortunate not to score, but it was his all-round play which caught the eye of fans – with many pointing to a stat that showed 23 of 24 passes were successful.

On the club's Official Facebook page, an overnight post asks supporters what they thought of Edinson’s performance and this sample of comments shows the respect for our new no.7…

Watch goals from Fernandes (2), Rashford and James, as the Reds move clear at the top of Group H…

Stevie McCallum: “Proper number nine! He plays them little drop-off passes with his back to goal, makes intelligent runs – like Bruno’s second goal for example, when he puts the keeper off. A solid performance even without being on the scoresheet – he definitely contributed to the game.”

Chafwakale Webby: “He was everywhere today and showed great composure under pressure. He fits in perfectly. I hope he starts on Sunday.”

Gerard Daly: “I thought his work-rate was brilliant! Already looks like his playing for the shirt! Well done!”

Goran Grabriel Ljuboja: “He was always an option, dropped in between the lines and linked up well. Worked in defence and was a genuine target to hit up top. He will only get better, I believe, as he gets more match fit. All in all, very positive!”
Mike Ommanney: “His enthusiasm and movement on the field is excellent. He has good link-up play and you can ping passes off him because he creates space. Obviously, he’s not a spring chicken, but he shows class and hopefully he can score some goals too.”

Cassious David: “Amazing. He was everywhere and I’m gutted he didn’t get a goal, but he was definitely a Man-of-the-Match contender. El Matador!”

Mustapha Mahami: “Even though he looked rusty because he has not played for a while, he made good runs, his hold-up play was good and he will be better when he gets to play a lot. A proper centre-forward and goals will come.”

Van de Beek was happy with United's third consecutive win, but says there's work to do against Southampton...

Mick Johnson: “Great performance - his movement and work-rate was top class. He has to start along with Donny van de Beek at the weekend.”

Savelo P Meyerz: “He’s starting to get a bit more comfortable. He goes deep from time to time, getting more involved in the game. He poses as the danger man and that's why the opposition focuses on him too much, forgetting what Bruno and Rashford are doing. All in all, a great game for Cavani and he looks fit and able.”

Giovanni Freitas: “Cavani is a team player. Unfortunately he did not get a goal, but he was always active in the plays because of his movement off the ball and quick one-two passing, like in the last goal. Grande El Matador!”
