How have United fared against our UCL opponents?

Erik ten Hag’s men were second into Group A following the German giants, subsequently followed by the Danish outfit and Turkish side. 

A club steeped in history, there is little surprise that United have previously encountered this trio of clubs, both in and outside of this historic competition. 

As we look ahead to our Champions League return, we take a look at our previous fixtures with each of our Group A opponents...

BAYERN MUNICH 

United and Bayern Munich are no strangers to one another in the Champions League. Our most memorable encounter, of course, was that dramatic win in the 1999 final when a late double from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinched the Treble.

The most recent competitive clash between the two clubs came in 2014, when Patrice Evra’s thunderous opener in Munich was cancelled out in a 3-1 loss for the Reds. 

The teams did meet in pre-season in 2018, in a friendly game that Bayern won 1-0 at the Allianz Arena. 

In 11 competitive meetings so far, we've registered two wins, five draws and four defeats.

FC COPENHAGEN 

United have met FC Copenhagen three times previously. In the 2006/07 group stage, the Reds won 3-0 at Old Trafford, before losing 1-0 in Denmark.

More recently, the clubs faced each other in a Europa League quarter-final in 2020. Bruno Fernandes's injury-time penalty gave the Reds a hard-fought 1-0 win at the neutral venue of Cologne's Rhein Energie Stadion.

There is also further interest following the recent arrival of Rasmus Hojlund at the club. The 20-year-old made his professional debut with FC Copenhagen three years ago, spending two years in his homeland before moving on to Atalanta.

GALATASARAY 

Turkish side Galatasaray were the fourth and final team drawn into Group A. It has been 11 years since we last faced them, leaving the Turk Telecom Arena empty handed having suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat. 

The Reds have the upper hand as far as the record goes, winning two of our six meetings and tasting defeat just once. The three other games ended in draws. 

A more recent connection between the two teams came last season, when fans favourite Juan Mata departed United and helped Galatasary to a Super Lig title in his only season with the club.
