United set for 200th meeting with Tottenham

Thursday 17 August 2023 12:18

When Manchester United make the journey to the capital to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, it will be the 200th time the sides have locked horns.

Spurs fans have lost homegrown star Harry Kane to Bayern Munich but recording their 54th victory over United will surely go a long way to providing confidence that new manager Ange Postecoglou is the right man to take them forward.

In the opposite dugout, Erik ten Hag will take charge of the first away match in his second season at the Reds' helm, with Monday's 1-0 win against Wolves at Old Trafford providing a healthy mix of excitement and drama on our opening night.

When looking at the previous 199 meetings between United and Spurs, history smiles upon us, with a double-century of clashes on the horizon.

Saturday's clash in the capital will be the 97th for United in Spurs' backyard, although the venue in question changed four years ago. Of our four meetings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Reds have won two and drawn two.

Last season, our away fixture at Spurs was very much a game of two halves, with the hosts coming back from two goals down to earn a late 2-2 tie.

Overall, the Reds have seen more success over Saturday's hosts back at Old Trafford, with 66 wins in M16 compared to 28 away (25 at White Hart Lane, two at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and one at Wembley).

There have certainly been some eye-catching clashes between United and Spurs in the past, with the 5-3 triumph in 2001 - after the Reds were 3-0 down at half-time - living long in the memory.

Big scorelines have been a trend between the two sides, with United's 5-2 victory in 2009 being topped off by ex-Spurs man Dimitar Berbatov netting against his former employers.

In more recent memory, Cristiano Ronaldo's sublime hat-trick at Old Trafford in 2022 earned United a 3-2 win over the Lilywhites.

Berbatov swapped Spurs for United when he famously made the move north on deadline day in 2008.

Joining him on the list of players who have donned the shirts of both clubs are the likes of Michael Carrick, Fraizer Campbell, Teddy Sheringham and Louis Saha, among others.

Current United midfielder Christian Eriksen arrived in English football with Tottenham too, but now pulls on the red of United following his arrival in M16 last summer.

Marcus Rashford enjoyed his most fruitful season for the Reds last term, hitting 30 goals across the campaign.

His final away strike of 2022/23 was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in that 2-2 draw back in April.

Rashford has scored five Premier League goals against Spurs in the past, his joint-third highest tally against a single opponent, having racked up eight against Leicester and six against Liverpool and Chelsea.

This term, fresh from signing his new contract, our no.10 will undoubtedly want to emulate and even surpass the success of last season, starting with Saturday's clash in the capital.
