Spurs v United: Kick-off time and TV info

Wednesday 16 August 2023 16:55

Manchester United visit Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening (17:30 BST), for our first away fixture of the Premier League season.

Erik ten Hag's side got off the mark with three points on Monday, beating Wolves 1-0 thanks to Raphael Varane's header.

We have a good record at Spurs' new stadium, having won twice and drawn twice in our four visits, and we will be looking to keep that run going in north London.

Ange Postecoglou and his men will provide tough opposition though, as they embark upon a new chapter without talismanic striker Harry Kane...

WHAT’S THE TEAM NEWS?

Lisandro Martinez departed at half-time during the win over Wolves and was replaced by Victor Lindelof. The World Cup winner had been booked by referee Simon Hooper.

Erik ten Hag will be asked about the squad when he faces the media in his pre-match press conference, which will be aired across our platforms on Friday.

He could also expand on Rasmus Hojlund’s fitness, with the Dane continuing to recover from the injury he picked up while with Atalanta.

Amad, Kobbie Mainoo and Tyrell Malacia are longer-term absentees, but Dean Henderson and Anthony Martial returned to the bench on Monday night.

Postecoglou is waiting on the fitness of Cristian Romero, who was substituted shortly after scoring against Brentford at the weekend after suffering a head injury.

Fraser Forster and Tanguy Ndombele are doubts, while Rodrigo Bentancur (knee), Bryan Gil (groin) and Ryan Sessegnon (thigh) are all injured.

WHO’S THE MANAGER?

Postecoglou joined Spurs in June, three months after Antonio Conte’s departure from the club. Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason saw out the season as interim managers, with Tottenham finishing eighth and outside of the European places.

The 57-year-old’s career had mostly been confined to Australia prior to 2017 and he managed the Socceroos at the World Cup in 2014, before experiencing Asian Cup success the following year.

His spell with Yokohama Marinos in Japan attracted the attention of Celtic in 2021 and Postecoglou was much loved on the green side of Glasgow, claiming five of the six domestic trophies across his two seasons before moving south.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST SEASON?

Arguably United’s most impressive performance of the campaign saw us put Spurs to the sword at Old Trafford last October, with goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes gleaning a 2-0 win on a night where we could have scored five or six.

Six months later, we raced into another two-goal lead after a similarly stellar showing in north London, as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford made it on to the scoresheet this time. Spurs rallied in the second half under Mason’s temporary management though, and rescued a point through efforts from Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min.
