Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrives at Old Trafford

Confirmed: United's team to take on Manchester City

Tuesday 07 January 2020 19:00

Manchester United's team for the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City was announced at 19:00 GMT, one hour before kick-off at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made six changes to the side that drew 0-0 away to Wolves last Saturday night, as the Reds battle with the Blues for a place in the Wembley final on 1 March.

David De Gea is back in goal to replace Sergio Romero who played at Molineux. There are two differences in defence with Aaron Wan-Bissaka replacing Ashley Young at right-back and Phil Jones coming in for Harry Maguire, who the manager had reported as “hobbling around” after our weekend clash in the Midlands.

It is Jones’s first start in the XI since the dramatic 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane against Sheffield United in November, although he did make a substitute appearance against AZ Alkmaar in the final Europa League group match at Old Trafford last month.

Jesse Lingard comes into the attacking midfield positions and Marcus Rashford is back in the starting line-up after being a sub at Wolves, where he came on for Dan James late on. Mancunian striker Rashford wears the armband, making it the first time he has captained the Reds at senior level.

The line-up includes seven players who started when United beat City 2-1 in the Premier League at the Etihad in December, with Maguire, Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial, a sub this evening, being the men to miss out.
Discussing his team in a pre-match interview with MUTV, the United manager said:

"Harry couldn’t make it, so was there was no point trying to make things worse. He was trying until the end, but he’s not ready.

“I think with Marcus captaining the team for the first time, that’s a good night for him. For Brandon and Mason, it's probably the biggest game they’ve played, against the best team they’ve played. But they’ve risen to every challenge we’ve given them and we felt we wanted to give the young lads a chance today. That’s part of our identity - to give young lads a chance.”
Turning to the tie in prospect, Ole added:

“At half-time today we’re only a quarter of the way through. You’re not going to win or lose it today, hopefully. It’s one of them where we'll come in at the end and there’s still three weeks to go until we play them again.”
