Confirmed: United's team to face Wigan

Monday 08 January 2024 19:15

Erik ten Hag has selected his Manchester United side for the Reds' first test of 2024: the Emirates FA Cup third-round tie at Wigan Athletic.

Nine days have elapsed since the disappointing 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest and United have made two alterations to the line-up that started the game at The City Ground.

Rasmus Hojlund is back in the team, after illness, while Scott McTominay also begins the match.

He was involved as a half-time substitute in the East Midlands, replacing Kobbie Mainoo, but the Scotland international lines up alongside his fellow Academy graduate this evening.

Antony (injury) and Christian Eriksen (illness) are the players to drop out of the XI and neither are in the matchday squad. Amad is also ill.

Andre Onana has been selected in goal, continuing his record of playing in every United game this season, ahead of the start of the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Aside from goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir, it's a youthful-looking bench for the Reds in Wigan, with Joe Hugill, Omari Forson and Rhys Bennett all in with the chance of making their first-team debut.
