The Reds guarantee progress to the Continental Cup quarter-finals, with a deserved victory on Merseyside.

The pairing with the Londoners comes on the back of United securing progression to the knockout stage of this season’s tournament last week, with a 2-0 victory away to Everton in our final Group B match.

The win ensured that we had enough points to advance to the forthcoming round, although it is still to be confirmed whether that is as group winners or as the ‘best runners-up’, which we will know once the outstanding game in our group between Leicester City and Manchester City is played upon being rescheduled.
As for Arsenal, January’s tie will mark the start of their journey in this campaign’s tournament and it is a trophy that they have previously lifted five times, most recently in 2018.

The capital side were awarded an automatic bye from the group stage, along with Chelsea, due to their participation in this season’s Champions League.

It will be our second meeting with the Gunners this season, after they edged November’s league contest at Leigh Sports Village, while it will be the first time we have gone head-to-head with them in the League Cup since 2018/19, when they emerged 2-1 winners from our semi-final clash in London.
