Skinner: Geyse is a world-class player

Monday 05 February 2024 11:00

Marc Skinner described Geyse as ‘world class’ after Manchester United Women's comfortable 2-0 win over Brighton on Sunday.

Our no. 23 assisted Nikita Parris for both goals and had many fans talking about her skills after the game.

Parris’s strikes increased her tally to 15 for the season so far, as well as moving her up to third in the all-time Women’s Super League goalscorers list.

Skinner spoke to the press about the team’s dominance and some key individual performances, as well as reflecting on the Munich Air Disaster ahead of Tuesday’s anniversary.

Nikita Parris and Geyse combined for both goals as United beat Brighton 2-0 in the WSL.

GEYSE IS WORLD CLASS

"I would hope that you watch Geyse and you get excited. She is at home on that right-hand side. As she gets more confidence, she is going to get more goals as well. If I was a left-back, I would hate to play against her. I thought Poppy [Pattinson] did a really good job trying to stop her but Geyse just has an unbelievable quality. She excites our players, she excites the fans, she is a real world-class player."

NIKITA’S FORM IS HARD TO IGNORE

"Nikita has shown all the qualities of a true number nine. Even when she plays on the side she gets into the positions of a nine. She is in one of the best veins of form in her life. Her runs are perfect.

"I hope she gets rewarded for that if [England manager] Sarina [Wiegman] and her team think it’s right at this moment. It’s got to be hard to ignore."

IT WAS A COMFORTABLE PERFORMANCE

"We said at half-time that there were a couple of stoppages in play and you could feel it around the stadium. We dropped off in our intensity. Brighton, in their build-up play, dragged us into shapes. I felt in the second half we maintained our dominance.

"Barring Mary Earps's fantastic save in the first half, it was pretty comfortable from a defending standpoint because we defended further up the field."

Skinner and Brighton interim boss Mikey Harris laid wreaths ahead of the game, to commemorate the Munich Air Disaster.

IT’S A POIGNANT MOMENT

"It’s a huge moment in the club. Having been at the club and shared this moment for a couple of seasons, you really connect to it.

"You see what it means to the fans and everyone involved in the club. It’s such a poignant moment, they helped build this club.

"For me, I am going to use it as a really poignant moment to celebrate the lives of these fantastic people. It reminds people of who we are and where we have built from."
