Skinner sees City clash as great opportunity

Manchester United Women boss Marc Skinner believes that our Continental League Cup match against Manchester City is a great opportunity for the Reds to put things right.

United were beaten 3-1 at Chelsea on Sunday and lost by the same scoreline against City at Old Trafford in November, but Skinner has faith his side will hit high levels again when we face our local rivals in a competition where we have been impressive so far this term.

After three matches, the Reds sit at the top of Group B with maximum points, and make the short trip to the Joie Stadium on Wednesday to play Gareth Taylor's side (19:00 GMT kick-off, live on MUTV).

Ahead of the derby, Skinner hopes his team can continue our form in the Conti Cup and progress to the next stage, with our hosts just one point behind us in the group.

Marc Skinner says effort is more important than quality in derbies, as we prepare to face Man City in the Conti Cup...

"We are playing against probably the most difficult opponent, away, in the last game," he said to club media.

"But this is still a derby and this is still Manchester United versus Manchester City, so our players will give everything to try to get the result. I think that is important.

"It is a Conti Cup game of a high level and there are lots of connotations around the game and that will unfold as it goes on but all we can do is try to win a game of football. Try to give our absolute all and win the game of football."

The boss also gave an injury update on Melvine Malard and Jayde Riviere, with the former missing the trip to Chelsea and the latter suffering a knock at Stamford Bridge.

"[Malard] trained a little bit yesterday, so she will potentially be in contention," he said.

"Jayde took a knock at the weekend so it might be a race against time."
