Marc Skinner: We will come back stronger

Thursday 19 October 2023 11:09

Marc Skinner says Manchester United Women are committed to becoming a "constant in the Champions League".

The Reds were knocked out of the competition in the second round after losing 4-2 on aggregate against French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

The second leg at Parc des Princes saw the Reds lose 3-1, with Lisa Naalsund scoring our only goal of the game.

Following the final whistle, Skinner gave his thoughts on the match...

On the overall performance…

"I thought we were excellent second half. First half we did not show our personality and we have to take accountability of that. We must be better at doing at but that’s the experiences we will learn. I thought that we were much better [in the] second half.

"They are a counter-attacking team. They have a lot of pace and they are deadly with it. We could have defended both goals better and then, in my opinion, I feel we got some questionable decisions.

"I think our players will be accountable for tonight. There are chances that we should score.

"More importantly, we deserve to be at this level – I have no doubt about that. We will learn from it, we will come back stronger. You know my team, we are driven to make sure we are a constant in the Champions League."

On Leah Galton’s disallowed goal…

"That was 100 per cent a goal. I have no doubt in my mind. Then it would have been 3-2 and we would have had the momentum. It’s not good enough at this level. It should have been a goal.

"Leah Galton clearly heads the ball, doesn’t touch the goalkeeper and it’s given as a foul on the goalkeeper. It’s ridiculous."

On moving forward…

"Their second goal is something that we have to learn from. There were three mistakes – we slip, when she drives to the box we dive in and let her go past and then we have one player to mark her in the box and we don’t mark her. It’s not good enough and we have to fix it.

"It’s something that we are in control of. We didn’t control the moment – we have to learn from that.

"This is the highest level. We have to learn how to play against teams like this.

Marc shares his thoughts following our exit from the UEFA Women's Champions League...

"You have to defend the spaces better.

"We did for a lot of he game – there is a lot of really good stuff there. I am going to ask us to take accountability of those moments because if you want to be a top team then you have to defend one-on-ones really well and if we are going to beat teams in our league like Chelsea you have to defend better.

"If you don’t, you cannot expect to win and I want our team to expect to win."
