Marcus Rashford.

Rashford: I knew the goals would come

Wednesday 03 February 2021 12:20

Marcus Rashford says he was never worried about Manchester United’s brief lull in front of goal, which ended on Tuesday night with our 9-0 victory over Southampton.

The Reds equalled a Premier League record with that nine-goal victory at Old Trafford, with Marcus himself grabbing the second in the rout, while his powerful cross set up the third of the night, although the final touch did come off Saints defender Jan Bednarek.

The Reds had been somewhat off colour in front of goal in our previous outings against Arsenal and Sheffield United, but Marcus says he always knew we’d recapture our goalscoring touch.

“I think if we’re not in positions to score goals, that’s a problem but, throughout the games where we’ve not scored the goals, we’ve always had chances,” the striker told club media, after the big win.

Having now scored more United goals than Eric Cantona, Marcus gave us his thoughts on the Reds' 9-0 win...

“We’ve been unfortunate with some, some we should have scored, some keepers have made some top saves, but I think, as a forward, you can sort of accept that.

“You can accept missing chances, of course you have to improve and do better, but the thing you can’t accept is not being in the areas to score the goals.

“As long as we keep doing that, we’re giving ourselves the best chance of scoring goals and winning games. For me, for the forwards that’s what it’s about.”
The 9-0 win was the joint-highest in Premier League history, and only twice before has a side won by nine goals since the league’s inception in 1992, including our hammering of Ipswich Town in 1995.

Marcus felt the Reds’ commitment to scoring was excellent, especially in the second half, and knows our effort was indicative of the club’s offensive DNA.

“I think, for Man United, we just go out there and try to win games, that’s always the way it has been and I remember, when I was younger watching games here, it was always exciting games, scoring four, five, six goals,” said Rashford..

“I think whenever we can, we want to put them types of results together and go out and really finish teams off and today was a perfect example of that.”

Our no.10, who moved into the club’s all-time top-25 goalscorers on Tuesday, ahead of the great Eric Cantona, hopes the goal bonanza at the Theatre of Dreams can help instil extra confidence into the side between now and the end of the campaign.

“Hopefully it can push us all in the right direction for the rest of the season now,” said the 23-year-old. “We’ve dropped a few points in the last few league games so yeah, we needed a night like this really, just to get us going again.

“We can’t really ask for much more than today so we need to use this performance and the result today as motivation really, and something to mirror in the next few games. If we do that, we’ll pick up three points.”
