What Rooney said to Rashford after win over Charlton

Wednesday 11 January 2023 10:53

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford scored in his eighth successive home game on Tuesday evening, matching a feat previously achieved by Reds legend Wayne Rooney.

Rashford came off the bench in the 3-0 triumph over Charlton Athletic, netting a late a brace to help United advance to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

His goals, both coming in stoppage time, mean that our current no.10 has impressively netted in each of his last eight appearances at Old Trafford, matching a feat last completed by Rooney between January and March of 2010.

That fact was a talking point across social media among last night’s post-match reaction, with Marcus tweeting Wayne to celebrate matching the latter's achievement.

It prompted a great response from Rooney, currently managing MLS side DC United, who posted: “Class @MarcusRashford. Let’s keep it going.”

Only Dennis Viollet, one of our legendary Busby Babes, has found the net in nine games in a row at the Theatre of Dreams before, as Rashford looks to continue his run to match another United great.

Fifth on the list of our all-time top scorers, Viollet racked up the unprecedented sequence between August and December 1959.

Marcus will have a chance to go level with that tally in this weekend’s Manchester derby, when City visit Old Trafford for a Premier League contest at Saturday lunchtime.
