Rashford sets scoring pace for Europe's biggest leagues since World Cup

Marcus Rashford’s strike versus Barcelona not only drew the Reds level on the night, but it also reaffirmed his position as the highest scorer from a team in Europe's top five leagues since the season restarted after the World Cup.

The match finished 2-2, setting up an mouth-watering encounter at Old Trafford next week, but our no.10 once again illustrated to those on the continent just how prolific he is, moving to the summit of the Europa League goalscoring charts in the process.

Marcus now has four in the competition this term, level with Braga’s Vitinha and Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez.

What’s more impressive, though, is Rashford’s goalscoring form in all competitions.

Being presented with the tightest of scoring angles wasn't a problem for Marcus Rashford, just after Barça's opener...

The electric forward has now notched on 14 occasions since the season’s restart, a feat matched by no other player in Europe’s top five leagues.

The closest to him are Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who have both found the back of the net nine times since Qatar 2022.

You may be forgiven if you thought that Xavi’s side, who have conceded only seven goals in La Liga so far this term, would have thwarted Rashford and his scoring form, but that was simply not the case, as he lit up the iconic Nou Camp much in the same way United did when we drew 3-3 there back in 1998.

Marcus, joins Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke – our goalscorers that night 25 years ago – as the third United player to have netted against Barcelona in their own backyard, also creating our second of the evening by effortlessly dancing past Raphinha and fizzing in a dangerous cross that Jules Kounde could only divert into the back of his own net.

Rashford, like all of us, will be hoping to gain the win when Xavi brings his Barça side to Old Trafford next week for the second leg, but in the meantime, United have the test of Leicester to deal with in the Premier League on Sunday.

Our no.10 has scored against the Foxes six times in the past, and assisted Jadon Sancho’s winner earlier in the season when we defeated them at the King Power Stadium.

Rashford will be looking to add to that tally this weekend, of course, and on the evidence of the last two months, there's no doubt this particular Red Devil is on fire.
