Marcus represented England at Euro 2020 as Gareth Southgate's side went all the way to the final before losing in a penalty shoot-out to Italy.

The forward made 64 appearances for club and country in 2020/21 and will be determined to return better than ever to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Reds compete for the top honours at home and aborad.

Speaking last month about the prospect of having an operation, while with the England camp, he said: "Obviously, I am not performing at my best and what I know I can perform to.

“Whatever that is down to, it doesn't really matter because it has been going on since early on in the season. I managed to get through the season with United.

“I think I had 36 goal involvements so I can't look back at the year and say 'I should have taken time off to do this and do that'. That's just not the way I look at things. I just want to be available for every game.”

The boss sits down with us to reflect on his 25th anniversary since joining the club.

We spoke to United legend Bryan Robson about the situation recently and he said: “I mean, if there’s a weakness there, then the best thing is, if he has been advised that he should have an operation on it, then bang, get straight in, because, like me, I missed half of the World Cup in 1986 because of my shoulder.

“When I got back to England, I had the operation and never had another problem with it for the rest of my career.”
