Thorisdottir looks ahead to Sheffield United clash

Manchester United Women defender Maria Thorisdottir is hopeful the Reds can end 2022 on a positive note, as we prepare to take on Sheffield United in the Continental Tyres League Cup this weekend.

Despite having already been eliminated from the competition, Marc Skinner's side have been in superb form as of late, having posted just three losses since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

United host the Blades at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday (kick-off 12:00 GMT), with Thorisdottir adamant preparations have continued in the same manner, despite our exit.

Thorisdottir: Let's finish the year on a high

Maria Thorisdottir makes United Women's aims clear ahead of meeting Sheffield United in the last game of 2022...

''I am good and training has been really good. It's the last week of this year and people are doing well,'' began Maria when speaking to club media ahead of the match.

''We are all very excited for that game. We know we are out of the competition but it is still a chance for people to get minutes.

''We are really excited and we want to finish this year on a high.''

Following our most recent 1-1 draw with Manchester City last weekend, Skinner's side remain firmly in the title race this season, sitting just five points behind table-toppers Chelsea in the WSL, with a game in hand over the Blues yet to come.

Reflecting on the performance at the Etihad Stadium, the 29-year-old felt United were unlucky not to come away from the home of our neighbours with all three points.

''I think we are all a bit disappointed by just the point,'' she added.

''We want to win those games and we wanted to win that game. For us it is now going into a new week, new game and we prepare as normal.

''There have been a lot [of games] and it has been a long year. We do look forward to it [the upcoming break] but first of all we have a game to finish first.

''Our mindset is finishing off this game and then we can have a well earned break.''

United Women welcome the south Yorkshire side for our final game of 2022.

Sunday's clash with Sheffield United is at Leigh Sports Village, a ground which Maria says she enjoys playing at, due to our loyal home supporters.

''We like to play at Leigh, it is different to playing at the big stadiums which we always like, but we can hear the fans better,'' she said.

''They are a bit closer but we definitely like to play at Leigh.

''I hope as many people as possible turn up to the game and I hope we can finish off with a really good result.''
