Mason eyes more goals

Mason Greenwood says he and Marcus Rashford are fully focused on getting more goals for Manchester United in the coming weeks as the Reds lose Anthony Martial to suspension and await the arrival of new Edinson Cavani.

The 19-year-old could be paired alongside Rashford for Saturday evening’s Premier League trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United with Martial now out for three matches following his dismissal against Tottenham Hotspur.

Cavani is currently completing his quarantine period since joining on deadline day, so much of the focus for goals will turn to Greenwood and Rashford.

Mason says the pair have been working hard in training on shooting drills, but he also insists there are goal threats throughout the team.

The Brazilian outlines the team's aims ahead of a hectic and exciting month ahead.

“We [me and Marcus] have worked on some extra finishing and I’ve worked all week on my shooting so I’m sure we’ll be able to get the job done,” he told club media. “We both know our capabilities and we both know how to play with each other so it should be good.

“Also though the rest of the team can score, we’ve got players from the full-back and midfield areas who can score. It just depends what team the manager picks and I’m sure whoever gets selected can get us goals.

“We’ve had a week to get our work done and we’ve worked with the boys who have come back from international duty and it’s a good place, even if it might not seem like it… it’s a good place to be and we’re getting back on our feet and I’m sure we’ll do our job against Newcastle.

“We know they’re a tough opposition and going away to any Premier League club is hard,” he added. “But I’m sure we’ll be able to do our job. We’ve looked at some of their weak points and some of the positives, but I’m sure we’ll go there and do our best.”

Earlier this week Greenwood was confirmed on the 20-man final shortlist for the 2020 edition of the prestigious European Golden Boy award. The man himself is delighted but remains concentrated on his efforts for the team above personal honours.

“Obviously it’s amazing to get selected,” he beamed. “But I’m also here at one of the best clubs in the world and while it’s good from an individual part, I’m more concentrating on the league and the Champions League and all the cup games coming up.”
