Preview: United v City in the Continental Cup

Tuesday 17 November 2020 16:16

Manchester United Women will once again play Manchester City, just five days after the two sides drew 2-2 in the Women’s Super League.

Tobin Heath and Kirsty Hanson were the heroes for United at the weekend, as the Reds valiantly fought back from two goals down to earn a point at Leigh Sports Village.

It was in last season’s FA Women's Continental League Cup that United secured a maiden victory over our crosstown rivals, and the team will be looking to repeat that feat this time around.

Here’s everything you need to know…

IS IT ON TV?
Our second Continental Cup game of the season will be broadcast live on MUTV on Thursday, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT. If you can’t make it, we’ll show a full rerun on the same channel later that evening, from 22:45 GMT, and you can also keep up to date with all the key events and moments from the match on the official team Twitter.

HOW IT STANDS
It’s a must-win game for Casey Stoney’s side, who currently sit bottom of the group after a 3-1 loss to Liverpool at the beginning of October. City, meanwhile, beat Everton and Liverpool in their opening two fixtures and need only a point to secure their place in the knockout stage of the competition.

While only the first-placed side is guaranteed to progress, the Reds could also qualify for the next round by coming second in Group C - the two best second-placed teams will join the six group winners in the quarter-finals.

WHAT THEY SAID
Kirsty Hanson recently commented on the importance of the game, and that the Reds were wholly focused and prepared for the match ahead. “[It’s] another big game; we want to win that obviously. So, we need to switch around focus on what we did, on what our weaknesses are and how to fix them, and how to start off better on Thursday.”
