Match Preview: United v Tottenham

Friday 23 April 2021 10:11

Manchester United Women return to WSL action as we welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Leigh Sports Village in this Sunday’s early kick-off.

A win would complete a league double over Spurs, after a routine 1-0 victory in the reverse clash thanks to a Millie Turner winner back in October.

This Sunday’s clash is one of our final three remaining league fixtures as Casey Stoney’s side continue the surge for that final Champions League qualification spot.

Here’s all you need to know heading into the game…

WHERE CAN I WATCH IT?

The game will be shown live in the UK on the BBC red button service, and can be streamed via the FA Player outside of the UK. United v Tottenham will be available to watch as a full replay from 16:30 BST on MUTV. Follow @ManUtdWomen on twitter for live updates throughout the game.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PICTURE

Mathematically, Chelsea and Manchester City have guaranteed their places in next season’s Champions League. With three qualification spots available to WSL teams, United look set to lock horns with Arsenal for the final one of them. As it stands, we are sat in fourth place, level on points with the Gunners on 38. Crucially, the London side are ahead on goal difference and have a game in hand, however, anything can happen before the end of the season and all could be left to play for by the time Everton visit Leigh Sports Village on the final day of the season.
FORM GUIDE

The Reds will be hoping to improve on our inconsistent form, which has seen an even split of wins and losses from our last six in all competitions. United beat Burnley 6-0 last time out in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, with the goals coming from Millie Turner, Ella Toone, Lucy Staniforth, Amy Turner and Kirsty Hansen (2). However, last time out in the league we were beaten 1-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion.

Spurs were also in cup action last weekend, running out 3-2 winners in a thrilling encounter with Reading, which was settled in extra time. Their league form, however, is less desirable, with just two points registered from the last eight league games.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

United have enjoyed our meetings with Spurs over the last few years and have actually won all five previous encounters with the north London side. Tottenham were our closest challengers for the Championship crown in 2018/19, with Spurs going up in second, one spot behind Stoney’s women. We also won both of our meetings that season – 4-1 and 5-1 respectively - before the Reds earned 3-0 victories home and away last season. Earlier this term, Millie Turner was on target as United achieved a fifth straight victory over Tottenham.
