Juan Mata tussles with Leicester's Christian Fuchs

Leicester City 2 Manchester United 2

Saturday 23 December 2017 22:24

There was to be no early Christmas present for Manchester United fans as, a stoppage-time Harry Maguire goal meant the Reds had to settle for a 2-2 draw against 10-man Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Jose Mourinho's men dominated the game and should have been out of sight after Mata's brace cancelled out Jamie Vardy's opener. And when Daniel Amartey was shown red late on for two fouls in quick succession, the game looked won, but Maguire popped up at the back post to secure an unlikely point for the hosts with virtually the last kick of the game.

United did not get back to Manchester until 5am on Thursday after transport trouble in Bristol, but the Reds were far from sluggish out of the blocks as Chris Smalling headed over an early United corner and Jesse Lingard had a deflected effort tipped over by Kasper Schmeichel.

Paul Pogba then tried his luck from 25 yards, but Schmeichel saved comfortably before a direct run from Martial allowed space for Mata to fire over.

At the other end, Leicester finally had a sustained period of possession 25 minutes in which resulted in Riyad Mahrez firing straight at David De Gea, before the hosts hit United with a trademark counter-attack. The Reds lost the ball to Wilfred Ndidi high in the Leicester half and he fired a long pass up field which found Smalling isolated against Mahrez. The Algerian patiently waited to feed the arriving Vardy, who coolly slotted past De Gea for his 50th Premier League goal.

The goal came completely against the run of play, but thankfully it wasn't long before the Reds drew level. Anthony Martial's cross found Lingard and his lay-off to Mata allowed the Spaniard the space to expertly stroke the ball into Schmeichel's far corner.

Maguire should have sent the Foxes into the break ahead, but he could not control in the box with just De Gea to beat.

Juan Mata scored twice, including this free-kick, as United overturned Jamie Vardy's opener for Leicester.

United, in a third successive away match in the space of six days, were nearly caught out early in the second half as Mahrez found Christian Fuchs at the back post, but Victor Lindelof made an expert block on the line before United hit the Foxes with a counter-attack of our own. Lingard found Romelul Lukaku, who fed Martial, but he blazed over when clean through. Martial was then blocked on the edge of the box and that man Mata doubled his and United's tally with an inch-perfect, curling free-kick that found the roof of the net.

The Reds should have put the game to bed as Lukaku fed Lingard but, when he rounded Schmeichel, the post denied him. Substitute Marcus Rashford, making his 100th United appearance, was fouled by fellow sub Amartey and that meant the Foxes were down to 10 men after the Ghanaian had been booked just four minutes earlier for a trip on Ashley Young.

United should have made them pay as Pogba's inch-perfect pass found Rashford in behind the Foxes defence, but Schmeichel's slight touch on the ball denied Rashford the chance to take it round the keeper.

And the missed opportunities came back to haunt the Reds as Maguire stole in behind an injury-impeded Chris Smalling to slide home Marcus Albrighton's last-minute cross and snatch a dramatic draw.

Jose: We were punished for our mistakes

Jose Mourinho rued a host of missed chances after United were held by Leicester.

REACTION FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Jose Mourinho: "We didn't win because we missed incredible chances. I would say joke chances. We made a big defensive accumulation of mistakes in an easy match to win. I said to the players at half-time when it was 1-1 that it was an easy match to win. The reality is that it is 2-2. Sometimes you make mistakes and are not punished for that. I feel great. We were punished for our mistakes.

"It was an easy match to win; we did everything to win but when you lose big chances, you can be punished and we were. A childish loss of possession, so easy. Childish in their box and childish in our box."

Juan Mata: "We didn't kill the game and we should have killed it - it's easy to say now. If we won, we would have been saying it was a fantastic game and we came back and did the most difficult thing, which was to score twice after they went ahead. But that's football and in the last seconds they put the ball into the box and scored.

"We have the feeling we should have killed the game before. It feels like a defeat because we were so close to winning and we had chances to kill the game. They were with one less player, so it feels like a defeat.

"You have to keep going, particularly at Christmas time when you play every two or three days. Now we feel frustrated and angry, but we need to keep going and from tomorrow, rest and think about the next goal. Obviously we aim to finish that game with a much better feeling."
