Report: Newcastle 1 United 4

United came away with all three points from Newcastle in a highly entertaining match. However, it started badly for the Reds after an unlucky own goal from Luke Shaw in the second minute. Thankfully that was cancelled out by Harry Maguire’s lethal header on 23 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes saw a penalty saved after the break, but four minutes from time our no.18 finished off a superb move, before Aaron Wan-Bissaka, on his 50th United appearance, rifled in his first-ever goal in professional football and the excellent Marcus Rashford need a fourth in the dying seconds.

In search of a response after the Tottenham defeat, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made five changes to his starting XI with Juan Mata, Dan James, Scott McTominay, Fred and Victor Lindelof all starting in the North East.

FIRST HALF - REDS BOUNCE BACK AFTER UNLUCKY START

The match started in the worst possible fashion as United fell behind before two minutes was played. Emil Krafth’s whipped cross took a heavy deflection off Luke Shaw and looped into the net past David de Gea, who was left stranded.

Following the initial shock, the Reds took control, creating several chances through quick movement and quality passing. United had the ball in the net in the 19th minute through Fernandes but it was rightly ruled out for an offside against Mata in the build-up.

Mata and Fernandes combined shortly after and a strike from the Spaniard was saved for a corner, which United fully made the most of. Mata swung the ball in and Maguire out-jumped everyone in the box to head home the equaliser with an excellent header.

On 30 minutes, David De Gea was called into action and pulled off a brilliant save from an Allan Saint-Maximin's shot from outside the box.

United kept up the pressure but the teams went into half-time at 1-1.

SECOND HALF - LATE STRIKES WINS IT

The second half got off to a chaotic start with Newcastle creating the first big chance after the restart, but De Gea was equal to it. Our no.1 pulled off a save of the highest quality as he superbly clawed away Callum Wilson's poked attempt from point-blank range.

Rashford was then fouled by Jamal Lewis in the Magpies’ box and referee Craig Pawson, after checking the VAR monitor, awarded a penalty. Fernandes stepped up but his 11th penalty for the club was saved by Karl Darlow. Maguire then had a header cleared off the line from the following corner.

The Reds turned the screw as Ole brought on Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek in search of a winner, and four minutes from time, United scored a team goal of the highest order. Van de Beek found Mata who played Rashford in behind with a magical through-ball. Our no.10 cut inside and released Fernandes on the overlap and from an acute angle, the Portuguese curled the ball into the top corner to put United ahead.

It looked likely to be the winner, but the scoring hadn't finished. Wan-Bissaka, on his landmark appearance, wanted to be involved and the right-back duly smashed home our third and his first-ever goal on the 90-minute mark.

Rashford then capped a brilliant week and performance as he added a fourth with almost the last kick of the game, ensuring the Reds ran out convincing and worthy winners.

Ole's praise for Maguire

“It was a test of character anyway after the 6-1 defeat last time and going 1-0 down so early on made it even more so. But it was great resilience, inspired by the captain. The more chances we created and the more pressure we were building, I felt it [the second goal] would come. It was just about looking for the extra pass maybe, and not the finish too early. Don't panic, don't rush it. We spoke about this at half-time and five minutes before time, that's plenty of time [to score it]."

Bruno Fernandes claimed 37 per cent of the votes to claim our Man of the Match award following his goal and assist against the Magpies. After seeing a second-half penalty saved, he crucially fired the Reds into the lead four minutes from time, before setting up Marcus Rashford for our fourth goal deep in stoppage time. Bruno beat off competition from Rashford and Juan Mata in our MOTM poll on a memorable night for the Reds.
