My United: Stereo Cupid

Thursday 25 January 2024 15:00

We recently caught up with Stereo Cupid, who are devout United fans and an emerging band originally from Manchester, to discuss all things music and find out more about the rich history of our city.

You may recognise Stereo Cupid from our recent Peter Saville collaboration with adidas, as the band featured in the campaign that celebrated the launch of the capsule - you can check that out here.

Their single Kid also featured in the wrap video as Manchester United faced Manchester City in a women's derby that was watched by a record crowd for a WSL game at Old Trafford.

Manchester has a rich musical history, from Joy Division to The Stone Roses, and much more. How has the city's musical legacy influenced your own work, and what do you think sets Manchester's music scene apart?

"Manchester has always been close to our hearts; we grew up playing in bands here and still today are completely obsessed with the music scene in Manchester. It’s all we really know. We grew up on the music, went to gigs, performed, and partied here; it’s in our DNA. To quote a United legend, Eric Cantona said: "Nobody can deny that here, behind the windows of Manchester, there is an insane love of football, of celebration and of music'".

The collaboration between Manchester United, Peter Saville, and adidas brings together football, fashion, and music. How do you see these different creative realms intersecting, and how important is collaboration in fostering a sense of unity within Manchester's artistic community?

"Manchester has always been about collaboration, helping each other out, and celebrating everyone’s creativity and community. The city is the powerhouse for fashion, music, art, and creativity, which is what really makes us stand out above other cities. These things unite us and bring us together; they break down barriers. No matter where you are from, how old you are, what religion you believe in, creativity brings us all together through the love of art. Manchester does this better than anywhere else."

Manchester has been the backdrop to many iconic musical moments and performances. Can you share a personal experience or a favourite memory related to performing in Manchester, and how do you think the city continues to inspire musicians today?

"We used to perform here when we were kids, playing sold-out shows at Pirate, Deaf Institute, and Retro. Even today we drive six hours in an old beat-up Vauxhall which broke down constantly on the way from London just to play here. It’s home for us. The city continues to inspire musicians; there’s always something going on, bands that we listened to when we were kids are still playing, new bands emerging, the scene will never die here. As long as we’re here, there’s always going to be guitar bands in Manchester."
