Ole's verdict on Southampton 2 United 3

Sunday 29 November 2020 17:15

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he is immensely proud of his side, after coming from behind to beat Southampton 3-2.

The Reds had trailed 2-0 at half-time before Edinson Cavani inspired us to an outstanding second-half turnaround.

The striker got the ball rolling when his cross set up Bruno Fernandes for our riposte, just before the hour mark. He then netted netted twice via headers to wrap up an excellent afternoon at St Mary's Stadium.

Speaking after the match to club media, Sky Sports and BBC Sport, the boss was full of praise for our no.7, gave an update on David De Gea’s injury and commented on a new club record of eight consecutive away league wins…

Solskjaer: I love the way Cavani moves

"He is one of the best because of his experience and qualities," says the boss, praising Edinson's impact...

A NEW CLUB RECORD
“It’s a difficult league of course, but I think the no crowds away from home has had an impact on that record. We don’t care about that one though, we just care about the three points today. The manner they came from the first kick to the last really, you can see the boys were focused, ready. We played well and created chances, we just couldn’t take them all, but we got what we deserved.”
TIMING OF BRUNO GOAL
“It’s all about getting the next goal and not conceding anymore. We knew there were more goals in the game, it was about just getting the first goal within 20-25 minutes. We know we’re getting fitter and fitter; we can out power team and we have subs who can make an impact. Edinson had a small impact in the game.”

CAPTIVATED BY CAVANI
“He is one of the best because of his experience and qualities, that movement. He is one of the best movers you can see. He can peel off the shoulder, he can get in front of you, he can pin you. He wants to be in between the two posts, which I love. I love a centre-forward who gets in there. It might hurt sometimes but, when you’re there and you get the ball there, you've gambled and the ball’s been delivered, it's a goal. Two goals!”
FIRST-HALF PERFORMANCE
“I thought we were excellent; excellent pressing in the first half. Mason [Greenwood] when he gets the first chance, you can see we’re at it. We were on the front foot; he just didn’t take the chances. Sometimes that happens. Fantastic saves by [Alex] McCarthy, especially when Mason shoots and the rebound to Bruno [Fernandes] - what a save! That was a world-class save. Then again, we’ve done enough. I thought we played some fantastic football, created chances - we mush have had five clear-cut opportunities and they have [James] Ward-Prowse, you just can’t stop him. You hope that you don’t give set-plays away because he has that quality. It’s one of them where you can’t blame anyone. It's one of those that when you win, the mistakes we made don't really matter. At the end I was so proud at 2-2 because we did so well.”

UPDATE ON DE GEA
“A knock just above the knee, so hopefully he’ll be ok for Wednesday, but we don’t know. Let’s have a little scan or check tomorrow, but Dean came on and looked very assured.”

RELIVING A RED TRADITION
“What a moment it could have been at the end. But the again, that’s the reality at the moment. We’ve hopefully entertained a few of our fans who were watching in front of the tellies because that was a very good performance. A good Man United tradition as well, of never giving in, coming back in a game. It was a fantastic comeback and to win it at the end was brilliant. It’s great to get three points in the way we did it… in the last minute. It’s a tradition of this club. It’s something this team is getting better and better at as well. This team is getting better and better and improving, which is what I want to see.”
