Ole: Varane has been impressive

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been impressed with the work Raphael Varane has done at Carrington since signing for the Reds.

The World Cup-winning defender could in contention to make his United debut when we make the trip to Molineux in the Premier League on Sunday (16:30 GMT).

And ahead of the game, Solskjaer spoke about how the 28-year-old's first weeks at the club have gone.

The Frenchman was an unused substitute in last weekend’s draw at Southampton, with that game at St Mary’s perhaps coming too soon for Varane, who only started training with the Reds earlier that week.

The boss provides an update on his plans ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash.

Now, he’s had another week on the pitch with his Reds team-mates and the boss has liked what he has seen from our new no.19, in the build-up to Sunday’s outing.

“He is working really hard,” Ole said to journalists via video link on Friday afternoon.

“When I asked him if he was ready to play, we had a behind-closed-doors [game] against Burnley and he felt: ‘No, I need to suffer on the training field first.’

“He needs to work because you know he had his holidays, he came in, said his goodbyes at Real Madrid, then he didn’t train with them, then he was waiting for his visa, then he came here, had his isolation.

“We found him a little garden, a house with a garden, he wasn’t ready to play, but now he’s had a good couple weeks of training and he’s looking impressive.”
Whether he makes his debut in the Midlands on Sunday or not, there is no doubt that Varane will already be making an impact behind the scenes at the United with the experience he has brought.

Fellow Frenchman and new club team-mate Paul Pogba spoke about what the defender has brought to the United dressing room, and Ole contributed towards that conversation during Friday’s press conference, as well as explaining what United will do for him.

“As a person, as a player, he’s got class. He will fit in at Man United, definitely,” Solskjaer said on Varane.

With just days remaining in the summer window, the boss explains the club's position on incomings and outgoings.

“We’ve signed a top person and a player at the right time,” he added.

“A new challenge for him after being a World Cup winner, Champions League winner with Real Madrid so many times, he probably needed a challenge and hopefully we can challenge him to take the next step.”
