Manchester United midfielder James Garner has received his first call-up to the England Under-21s set-up.

The 20-year-old has had a busy few weeks, signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2024 (with the option of an extra year) and then returning to Nottingham Forest on loan.

Garner will spend the remainder of the campaign at the City Ground, after impressing there during the latter half of last season.

And there was more good news when it emerged that Garner will be joining up with Lee Carsley's England Under-21s for their upcoming games against Romania and Kosovo.

It was a busy weekend for Jimmy: he signed a new contract, joined Forest on loan and gave this exclusive interview...

As if that wasn't enough, the Birkenhead-born player has also been attracting praise from United's greatest-ever goalscorer, Wayne Rooney.

The club legend is currently managing Forest's great rivals Derby County, and the two sides are due to meet on Saturday (28 August, kick-off 12:30 BST) for the first East Midlands derby of 2021/22.

Rooney admitted that he was so impressed with Garner's talent that he had even been working to entice the Red to join him at Pride Park.
“James is a fantastic talent,” said our former striker. “[He has] a lot of ability and it's a shame we couldn't get him in.

“He has gone back to Forest. He played very well for them last season. Now we have to make sure we do everything we can to make sure he doesn't influence the game [on Saturday] the way he can do.”

Will Fish and Shola Shoretire have been enlisted by England Under-19s for their matches with Italy and Germany, while Sam Mather and Daniel Gore will join up with the Under-18s for this weekend's fixture against Wales.
