Solskjaer's verdict on comfortable victory

Wednesday 17 July 2019 16:14

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with the performance of his players as Manchester United cruised to a 4-0 victory against Leeds United at the Optus Stadium.

After Marcus Rashford struck an upright early on, Mason Greenwood slotted home Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross to put the Reds into the lead, before goals from Rashford and Phil Jones, as well as a penalty by Anthony Martial, ensured we emerged victorious against Marcelo Bielsa's Whites.

Speaking to MUTV, and in his post-match press conference, the boss reflected on the match, plus the potential of Andreas Pereira and Rashford, before providing updates on Romelu Lukaku and Dean Henderson.

The boss gives us his verdict on the 4-0 thrashing of Leeds United...

PLEASED WITH THE PERFORMANCE

"We scored four goals and we are happy with that. We created a lot more chances than we did in the last game, so I'm very pleased with the work-out. When you can give the players 45 minutes each, it's a good work-out.

"We want to win every training session, every game and the players have come back with that grit."

PLENTY OF PACE UP FRONT

"The first goal was a lovely move. The quality of pass, the weight of pass, a great run by Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] and strikers who poach their goals is always nice to see. With the second goal, I like the counter-attack, we know we're a threat with the pace we've got up front and the quality in that attack was high as well."

OPTIONS ON THE FLANK

"We’re trying to build a squad that can have a long life and, with Diogo [Dalot] and Aaron, we’ve got two right-backs who will be very good players. Diogo can also play right-wing and probably from being a right-back, he’s also being able to play on the wing. Aaron has been a winger but can play right-back.

"It gives us good options on the right, they’re both wing-backs as well. Ashley Young can play both sides. He played at the World Cup last summer for England and can push Luke [Shaw] and Aaron and Diogo, no bother.

EXPECT TO SEE MORE OF ANDREAS

"We believe in the boy. We’ve given him a new contract. I think he answered a couple of questions today as well. He wants to learn. He listens to whatever you tell him and tries to put it into his game. There were a couple of things today I saw that were really encouraging.

"He did well last season, he played at PSG away in that win and the Southampton game, when he scored the goal. He came on and played against Liverpool. He is one I expect more from this season. You saw that today as well, if you give him game time, he will grow in confidence as well."

LUKAKU MISSING MINUTES

"Of course, it’s not ideal when you miss a training session and he was missing towards the end of yesterday’s session. He missed the game again and it’s two chances to play 45 minutes at this stage of the pre-season. It’s important for everyone to get fit and hopefully he’ll be available soon."

HENDERSON DUE TO FLY OUT

"At the moment, Dean is back in England, training. He’s had a 10-day break after he trained with us in the first week and he needed that after the England Under-21s. Of course, we were debating whether he should travel and come with us or stay and train in England.

"I thought maybe it’s best he comes here because David has got a temperature and fever that’s built up today. We didn’t want to risk him getting worse but hopefully he’ll play against Inter. Lee Grant is injured as well so we only had two fit keepers today."

MASON WILL BE A VERY GOOD PLAYER

"We know he is capable of scoring goals. We've seen it in training so many times in the last six months, so I'm not worried about him. Obviously he needs to build his body, get ready for men's football, which we will gradually do, and he'll become a very, very good player."

HIGH HOPES FOR RASHFORD

"He looks strong, he's had a good summer, picked himself up and I have high hopes for him that he's going to have a better season than last year."

THE POWER OF YOUTH

"Yeah, the young players held their own. Mason in the first half, Chongy [Tahith Chong] and Angel [Gomes] in the second half did really well and I think Jimmy [Garner], when he comes on for 15 minutes as well. He showed little glimpses of what kind of midfielder he is."

Our third pre-season game is against Inter Milan in Singapore on Saturday at 12:30 BST. As with all the pre-season games, it will be shown live on MUTV.
