The injury Jesse Lingard picked up late on in Manchester United’s 0-0 draw against AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League isn’t as serious as first feared, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The forward, introduced as a substitute for Mason Greenwood with 15 minutes to play, limped off down the tunnel at the Cars Jeans Stadium in added time with an apparent hamstring problem, after attempting to chase down a long ball.

After the final whistle, the manager said that he believed the injury looked worse than it actually was, with Lingard withdrawing himself as a precaution.

“He tweaked his hamstring, so he didn’t feel like he could risk it. But hopefully it’s not too bad,” Solskjaer said.

Ole added that our no.14 was unlikely to feature against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday, but suggested that, at this early stage, he could be okay to return after the international break.

“Probably not Newcastle, but [he should] be ready for Liverpool [in the Premier League on Sunday 20 October].”

In his pre-match press conference in the Hague, the Norwegian expressed his concern about the state of the pitch, which has an artificial surface, rather than the grass the Reds are used to playing on in the Premier League.

Lingard joins a number of his team-mates in the treatment room at Old Trafford, with Phil Jones and Anthony Martial ruled out of our trip to the north-east by Solskjaer earlier this week, and Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka doubts.
