The Manchester United Player of the Month trophy.

Opinions: My United Player of the Month is...

Tuesday 03 September 2019 14:55

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Daniel James are all nominated for Manchester United’s August Player of the Month award, but which of the three new signings will get your vote?

Here, five club reporters and lifelong Reds supporters offer their personal opinions on the poll that will close this coming Friday…

STEVE BARTRAM
My Player of the Month is: Daniel James
Why he gets my vote: Though he was our only new signing with no prior Premier League experience, the Welshman has adapted seamlessly to life at the top level. He already looks like a real bargain, with three goals in four appearances – two of them absolute belters. Consider also his attitude and work-rate, and he’s already a source of huge optimism.
Standout moment: His blockbusting opener at Southampton was an unbelievable hit. We knew he had pace; now we can add power to the list of attributes.
In a word: Relentless.

SAM CARNEY
My Player of the Month is: Daniel James
Why he gets my vote: He’s everything you want to see in a United footballer, showing youthful endeavour and getting bums off seats with his pacy, direct runs. We knew he was fast when he signed, what we didn’t realise was just how quickly he’d adjust to life in the Premier League.
Standout moment: His debut strike against Chelsea, just minutes after coming off the bench, and the visceral, cathartic celebration that followed. We'd all react like that if we scored at Old Trafford, wouldn’t we?
In a word: Electric
MARK FROGGATT
My Player of the Month is: Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Why he gets my vote: Goals and assists are the most entertaining moments in football, but this season I’ve buzzed off our new signing’s perfectly-timed tackles from right-back. There have been 26 in total, including 10 at Southampton, and that’s more than any other Premier League player, which underlines his effective start at United. I can’t wait to see how he kicks on from here.
Standout moment: Setting the tone by dispossessing Emerson, in front of the Stretford End, one minute into his debut.
In a word: Spider

JOE GANLEY
My Player of the Month is: Daniel James
Why he gets my vote: It’s rare for box-office signings to hit the ground running at United, let alone a relatively inexperienced 21-year-old. But James has quickly grasped what all Manchester United players must: the need to show courage, make an impact and embrace the pressure of playing for this club. His focus, concentration and humble attitude are an example to all.
Standout moment: The equaliser against Palace. Not a game I enjoy dwelling on, but the poise and precision of James’s finish was astonishing, given the tense and desperate situation. It revealed the lad’s bravery and solid character; two qualities that are imperative for anyone who wants to succeed at MUFC.
In a word: Urgent.

ADAM MARSHALL
My Player of the Month is: Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Why he gets my vote: I’ve been watching football for a long time but can’t remember seeing a better tackler, in the way that he thrives on snapping into biting challenges and winning his one-on-one duels. It’s almost like he lays traps for his opponents and catches them, just like a spider.
Standout moment: The tackle on Chelsea’s Ross Barkley on his debut; it looked certain from the stands that he would have to take a yellow card by bringing him down, yet he timed it perfectly.
In a word: Combative
