Rashford's return is a huge positive for United

Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand is backing fit-again Marcus Rashford to make a big impact on the team, following the striker’s welcome return from injury at the weekend.

The Academy graduate had an operation on a long-term shoulder problem during the summer and missed our opening 10 matches of the campaign. He thankfully returned to action on Saturday and made an instant impact, by scoring as a second-half substitute at Leicester City.

Watching the team will have been a frustrating experience for Rashford, a lifelong Red who always wants to help the team, but the time out will also surely have done him some good, both physically and mentally.

One positive to take away was Marcus Rashford’s goal-scoring return to action…

Crerand understands the pressures of representing United more than most and the 1968 European Cup winner is confident Marcus will have benefitted from his time out of the spotlight.

Writing in his popular column for United Review, our matchday programme at Old Trafford, much-loved Paddy looks forward to seeing Rashford against Atalanta in the Champions League.

“It’s terrific to have Marcus back and, hopefully, he’ll be on the bench at least. Every game is so important over the next few weeks that he’ll be desperate to get involved as soon as possible.
“He’d been doing so well, Marcus, and there’s nothing worse than getting an injury when things are going well for you. Some players do look fresher when they come back from injury.

“I always love it when people say footballers ‘get to have a rest’ – they don’t want a rest! But it can help. It’s your mind you need to rest, rather than your fitness standard, really.

“You’re under pressure every game you play at Manchester United. I don’t think people realise the pressure of playing for this club. If you’re injured, you’re out of that pressure for a while. Hopefully, Marcus will benefit from that mental break.
“We have a lot of big games coming up, and you need all your big players fit for them because you have to win these games if you want to win things, as we do here at United.”
