Rafael relishing Old Trafford reunion

Rafael has said he is already dreaming of playing at Old Trafford when his Basaksehir Istanbul side travel to Manchester United in three weeks’ time.

The ex-Red put in an excellent performance for the Turkish side as they beat the Reds 2-1 on Wednesday, to register their first points in Group H.

It was also Basaksehir’s first victory in the Champions League, which came courtesy of goals from Demba Ba and Edin Visca, while Anthony Martial netted for United just before the break.

Speaking after the match, Rafael admitted that, while he enjoyed the win, he cannot wait for the reverse fixture.

Rafael: It was strange!

Istanbul Basaksehir full-back, and former Red, Rafael da Silva stopped for a word with us after the final whistle…

“Definitely,” the defender responded, when asked if he was looking forward to his Old Trafford return. “The Theatre of Dreams is where my dreams came true. That is the truth.

“I put on Twitter that to play against Manchester United is a dream for me. Like I said, playing at Old Trafford will be amazing for me and I am looking forward to that.”

Asked if it felt odd to face his former side in Turkey, Rafael said: “Of course, it was strange! Now it is more than before. When I was on the pitch, I was just thinking ‘win the game’. When I’m on the pitch, I’m like that. Now I feel a little bit strange giving an interview with you.
“But, of course, I am happy for my team, my team-mates and me. Like I said, it was a very important three points.

“It was definitely a famous night where we show we are a good team. It is a new team it is important to win these games, everyone knows.”

While Rafael wasn’t supporting United on Wednesday, he assured our reporter Stewart Gardner it’ll be business as usual when we’re next in Premier League action. “For sure [I will be a United fan again after tonight]! I hope they win the next game already, this Saturday.”
