Amorim: This game will teach me more

Ruben Amorim firmly believes he will learn more about his Manchester United players in Thursday's home game against Southampton than the previous two outings.

The Reds started the calendar year with an impressive 2-2 draw at Premier League leaders Liverpool before knocking Arsenal out of the Emirates FA Cup at the first hurdle on Sunday.

The grit and character shown on both occasions, particularly when down to 10 men at the Emirates Stadium, has earned universal praise but Amorim has been clear to stress it is important this level of performance must be matched in every fixture.

Southampton may be rooted to the foot of the table, and we won the reverse fixture at St Mary's 3-0 towards the start of the campaign, but nothing will be taken for granted.

United desperately need points to start climbing the table, as we currently sit 14th and will slide even further if Crystal Palace earn victory at Leicester City tonight (Wednesday).

Hence, the focus is very much on getting the job done and defeating Ivan Juric's men.

"I think this next game will teach me more from my players than the last two," he stressed, during his pre-match press conference at Carrington. "I’m really focused to see what kind of game we are going to play tomorrow.

"So I will learn more tomorrow. Like I said, [it's] because there is no expectation in the last two games. No-one believed that we could do a great performance or [be] winning a game. But now they are expecting us to win and to play well, so I will learn more in this game."
