Romero voted Man of the Match in Wolves draw

Saturday 04 January 2020 21:14

Sergio Romero underlined his superb reputation among Manchester United fans by winning the Man-of-the-Match award from the Emirates FA Cup third-round tie at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

With David De Gea afforded a rest, the Argentina international started Saturday’s match at Molineux and produced another reliable display to keep a much-needed clean sheet in the Black Country.

Romero’s outstanding moment of the night arrived just 12 minutes into the cup tie, when he showed impressive reactions to palm Matt Doherty’s far-post shot away from the goal. Check it out below...

Early in the second half, on 50 minutes, Romero went down with an apparent injury but thankfully returned to his feet just moments later and made an excellent stop to deny Neto.

Sergio did see the ball go into his net after 76 minutes, but the ‘goal’ was quickly and correctly disallowed by referee Paul Tierney who spotted that Doherty's header had gone in via his hand.

After the stalemate, Romero was named our Man of the Match by earning 45 per cent of votes that were cast by fans in the Official United App.

The big man beat off competition from his fellow nominees Brandon Williams (40 per cent) and Mason Greenwood (15 per cent).

All three were shortlisted by MUTV analysts Wes Brown and Lee Martin.

PRAISE FROM HIS PEERS

Romero has now kept 33 clean sheets from 52 United appearances across all competitions and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quick to praise his goalkeeper during his post-match interview.

“With his positioning and his experience, he is great to have behind the back four,” the manager told us. “He breeds confidence. Of course, when players have got him behind them, they're confident and it's fantastic for me to call upon him when David [De Gea] needs a rest.”

Victor Lindelof was delighted to keep a clean sheet against a tough Wolves side and, when speaking afterwards, he also highlighted Romero’s positive contribution at Molineux.

“We all know what a great goalkeeper he is,” said the Sweden international. “He shows that every time he plays and I don't know how many clean sheets he has kept now. But he is an amazing goalkeeper and an amazing guy so I am very happy for him.”

Congratulations to Romero on an excellent performance against Wolves.
