Shaw and Solskjaer nominated for March awards

Friday 26 March 2021 12:00

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is among eight nominees for the Premier League's Player of the Month award for March.

The 25-year-old is enjoying a fine season so far, and is also in contention for the club's equivalent honour again, having also won it in February.

Shaw was again a key performer in March, as the Reds solidified our hold on second place, with wins over Manchester City and West Ham, and a goalless draw at Crystal Palace - indeed, United joined Chelsea as being the only top-flight side not to concede any goals during the month.

Luke was voted Man of the Match after both of our victories, and registered his third strike for the club during that memorable Manchester derby win.

Here's what happened when the Reds travelled across town for the Manchester derby in March 2021...

Our no.23 is bidding to follow in the footsteps of Bruno Fernandes, who has claimed the Premier League's monthly award an incredible four times since signing in January 2020.

United's last winner, other than the Portuguese playmaker, was Marcus Rashford, back in January 2019. Defenders don't often claim the prize, with the most recent being Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, in December 2019.

Shaw is up against a fellow Red, Jesse Lingard, who is enjoying a magnificent spell of form on loan at West Ham. Also in the running are Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, Chelsea's Andreas Christensen and Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez, plus forwards Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester), Harry Kane (Tottenham) and Leandro Trossard (Brighton).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been rewarded for United's strong form, with the boss being one of four names on the shortlist for Barclays Manager of the Month.

The Norwegian last secured that particular accolade right at the beginning of his Old Trafford tenure, in January 2019, although he has been nominated on several occasions since.

Our boss will have to beat Brighton's Graham Potter, Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel and Brendan Rodgers, of Leicester, this time around.
