What number will Shola Shoretire wear?

Thursday 18 February 2021 13:25

Manchester United youngster Shola Shoretire will wear the no.74 shirt, if he makes an appearance in our Europa League match with Real Sociedad.

The Academy forward has been training with the first team recently, and has travelled with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the squad to Turin for the first leg of our last-32 tie against the club from San Sebastian.

Should he make it onto the field at the Allianz Stadium, we can confirm he will wear the same number that he donned on his UEFA Youth League debut back in 2018.

Ole explains why youngsters are travelling

The manager tells us how our latest Europa League trip will be a great experience for Amad and Shola...

Shoretire made history in December of that year when Nicky Butt sent him on in the 75th minute of a 2-1 win over Valencia in Spain, becoming the youngest-ever player in the UEFA competition – at just 14 years and 314 days old.

He has regularly played in higher age groups during his time with the club, and has impressed in recent months as a member of Neil Wood's Under-23s team.

Shoretire, who started his football education at Wallsend Boys Club in the north-east – the same team where Michael Carrick began playing – scored a hat-trick in the Under-23s' recent 6-4 win over Blackburn Rovers.

The following week, he signed his first professional contract with United, the club he has represented since the age of nine.
Ahead of United's match with La Real, Solskjaer suggested that Shoretire and new signing Amad – who has also shone for the Under-23s – are not with the squad as a token gesture for experience.

“They’re in the travelling squad, not just for experience – they’re there to make an impact if they have to,” said the Norwegian.

“The two boys have done well in training and they are talents that we want to give experience to. First of all they’re travelling and then let’s see if they come on the pitch.”

The match will kick off at 17:55 GMT and will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom via BT Sport 1.
