Talking Points: West Ham 1 United 0

Sunday 07 May 2023 21:14

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat on the road in the Premier League on Sunday night, at the hands of West Ham United.

Said Benrahma’s breakaway goal in the first half was enough to separate the two sides at the London Stadium.

Despite late chances, with the home side under siege during eight minutes of stoppage time, the Reds weren’t able to find a leveller in the capital.

The Reds suffered a second consecutive defeat inside four days, as David Moyes' men emerged victorious.

HELD OFF BY HAMMERS

Having netted in the first 45, David Moyes’ team had something to hang onto in the second half and proved difficult to break down in the end. The result means the Reds drop points in the quest to confirm a top-four place, while West Ham move seven points clear of the relegation zone in their scrap to avoid the drop.

MISSED CHANCES

The was no shortage of opportunities for United – who created 19 shots throughout the match – but unfortunately only four of those were on target, with a number of efforts falling agonisingly on the wrong side of the woodwork.

STEP UP IN RECORDS FOR DE GEA

Sadly there was no clean sheet to mark the milestone, but David De Gea – who already has the most clean sheets in United history – has now become the club’s seventh all-time leading appearance maker with 540. In doing so he has moved past Alex Stepney to become the goalkeeper with the most appearances – congrats David!

THE TOP-FOUR RACE

Following this weekend’s round of matches, Liverpool are one point behind United in the table, but we do still have a game in hand over our rivals – who beat Brentford 1-0 on Saturday. Meanwhile, we remain two points behind Newcastle, in third, after the Magpies were bested by Arsenal earlier on Sunday.

THE RUN-IN CONTINUES

Next up we return to Old Trafford to face Wolverhampton Wanderers (Saturday 13 May, 15:00 BST), where the Reds will have the chance to complete the double over the Midlanders. Julen Lopetegui’s team aren’t mathematically certain of Premier League survival yet, but have reached the famed 40-point mark. It’s likely to be a close game though, with our last three meetings against Wolves all being decided by a 1-0 scoreline (won two, lost one).
