Confirmed: United's team to take on Chelsea

Thursday 04 April 2024 19:15

Manchester United's team to face Chelsea in the Premier League this evening (kick-off 20:15 BST) has been announced.

Erik ten Hag's starting line-up shows three changes from Saturday night's 1-1 draw at Brentford, whose Gtech Community Stadium is just five miles away from tonight's venue, Stamford Bridge.

The boss was forced to make at least one alteration to his XI, following the news earlier this week that Victor Lindelof will miss the next few games with a muscle problem.

Lisandro Martinez, a substitute at the weekend, was also ruled out in the same announcement.

Harry Maguire, however, is fit to start and he therefore comes in for Lindelof as Raphael Varane's centre-back partner.

"It would have been a headache if they were not fit, as we have a lack of fit defenders," Ten Hag told TNT Sports, the channel showing the game live in the UK.

"So it's a relief they are available, they are fit. Jonny Evans didn't train a lot but the others did and we have a proper back four, I think."
In front of them, Ten Hag has opted to bring in Casemiro as a replacement for Scott McTominay. The latter, who scored both of our goals when we beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford earlier in the season, is named among the substitutes.

Our third change is in the front four, with Antony starting instead of Marcus Rashford. He joins Alejandro Garnacho and captain Bruno Fernandes in an attacking trio behind Rasmus Hojlund, our top scorer with 13 goals in all competitions - including seven in his last seven league games.

The manager told TNT Sports that Rashford is on the bench with squad rotation coming into play during the current busy period. Our next game after tonight is on Sunday afternoon when Liverpool return to Old Trafford, this time in the league.

"We have two big games in three days," said Ten Hag, explaining his decision.

"We need everyone, we need the bench, and lately we have had a very strong bench. All the players coming from the bench have made an impact, like Mason Mount on Saturday, and Antony and Amad scoring goals in the Liverpool game.

"So it's very good to have players like Rashford on the bench, who we can bring in during the course of the game. Hopefully he can do the same [as the others]."

Former Chelsea midfielder Mount is also among the subs on his return to Stamford Bridge, with the boss admitting he's not quite ready to start.

"We will bring him in carefully. He has had so many problems in the course of the season, we want to avoid another injury. We have to build up his game minutes."
