Ole reveals team news for Southampton game

Friday 27 November 2020 13:30

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided the latest news on his squad in advance of Sunday afternoon's Premier League game at Southampton.

The Reds are looking to build on successes over West Brom, domestically, and Istanbul Basaksehir, in the Champions League, since returning from the international break.

Victory at St Mary's would secure a club record run of eight successive top-flight wins but the home side have enjoyed a marvellous start to the campaign, with Ralph Hasenhuttl's men sitting fifth in the table after briefly topping the division.

Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba did not train on Friday and could well be unavailable again - both missed the win over Istanbul and this would represent a third game out for Pogba since he was involved in France's UEFA Nations League ties.

Luke Shaw misses out on a reunion with the club he left to join United in the summer of 2014. The defender is still working his way back from a hamstring strain and, remarkably, due to his misfortune, he has only had one outing back at his old stamping ground since then, the 2-2 draw in January, 2018.

On the plus side, Jesse Lingard is free from his period of isolation due to COVID-19 regulations and there is the hope that doubts over the participation of Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford, who were all withdrawn on Tuesday night, will subside after working at the Aon Training Complex on Friday morning.

Phil Jones's return from injury may not be until the end of the year.

"Scott and Paul, they didn't train this morning," said Ole at his press conference. "They were not on the grass so they are very unlikely for the weekend. Marcus, Victor and Aaron, they came through the session today, so hopefully they should be okay, [if] still not 100 per cent.

“Luke has just started his rehab out on the grass, he's not with the team yet. Jesse's back from his isolation period so he's come back with the group and had a couple of days' training. Apart from that, Phil Jones is still out until probably after Christmas some time."

TEAM NEWS FOR SOUTHAMPTON

The Saints look set to be without Nathan Redmond (hamstring) and star striker Danny Ings (knee), due to injury. However, Will Smallbone could be available again and Mohamed Salisu is also making progress in terms of his fitness.

The south coast club can welcome 2,000 fans back into their ground when the latest lockdown rules are lifted but not in time for this match.
