De Gea's 400 games: The big numerical breakdown

The Spaniard overtook our former no.1, Peter Schmeichel, to become our leading overseas appearance-maker in any position, during last week's win over Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old has now brought up his quadruple century with the Reds – an achievement only reached by 26 previous United players, including Lou Macari (401) and Denis Law (404), both of whom David is on course to pass before the end of the current season.

To mark the milestone, here’s a detailed look at De Gea’s United career in numbers…

David’s clean sheet at Villa Park last Thursday took him to 141 in a United goalkeeping jersey. Only three keepers – Schmeichel (180), Alex Stepney (175) and Gary Bailey (161) – have shut out the opposition on more occasions and, with the Reds having recorded nine clean sheets in De Gea’s last 14 appearances, you wouldn’t back against the former Atletico Madrid man zooming to the top of that list in the years to come.

THE COMPETITIONS

De Gea made his United debut way back in August 2011, when the Reds came from two goals down to defeat Manchester City in a memorable Community Shield match at Wembley. The annual curtain-raiser, which David has played in a total of three times, is one of seven different competitions he has featured in for the club, with the UEFA Super Cup (1 appearance) also on the list with the more familiar Premier League (310), Champions League (42), FA Cup (20), League Cup (14) and Europa League (10).

THE MANAGERS

Sir Alex Ferguson clinched De Gea’s signature in the summer of 2011, and De Gea went on to play 80 games under our legendary boss, before his 2013 retirement. The Spaniard was an ever-present under our next two managers (David Moyes – 48 games, Ryan Giggs – 4) and featured heavily under Louis van Gaal (92) and Jose Mourinho (113). He has thus far made 63 appearances since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived back at Old Trafford in December 2018.

THE OPPONENTS

De Gea’s debut opponents, Manchester City, are the team he’s come up against most in a red shirt – with our crosstown rivals having faced David on 22 occasions. The Spaniard has kept the most clean sheets against Liverpool and Crystal Palace (7 against each) and has been picked to face a total of 65 different clubs as a Red.

THE PLAYERS

David has shared a pitch with 87 different Reds since August 2011, with Chris Smalling his most common team-mate on 243 appearances.

De Gea’s most frequent opponent is Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson (21 games played against the England international). He has saved penalties from five players: former Reds strikers Robin van Persie and Romelu Lukaku, during their time at Arsenal and Everton respectively, the Toffees' Leighton Baines, Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and CSKA Moscow’s Roman Eremenko.

Six other goalkeepers have played competitively for United during De Gea’s spell at the club. In order of the number of appearances, highest first, they are Sergio Romero, Anders Lindegaard, Ben Amos, Joel Pereira, Lee Grant and Victor Valdes.

HONOURS AND AWARDS

Thus far, David has claimed seven trophies during his time at United: the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and three Community Shields.

In terms of individual baubles, he has been named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year a club-record four times, Players’ Player of the Year on three occasions and the goalkeeper in the PFA’s Team of the Year five times. His stellar 2017/18 campaign, in which he kept 22 clean sheets and conceded only 35 goals in all competitions, helped him win the Premier League’s Golden Glove award.
