De Gea: Hopefully I have another 400 games coming

Friday 10 July 2020 07:00

David De Gea spoke of his immense pride at surpassing Peter Schmeichel’s appearance tally for Manchester United in Thursday night’s 3-0 win at Aston Villa.

Our no.1 made his 399th outing in United colours, more than any other overseas player for the club, including the previous record of 398 set by Schmeichel.

Speaking to MUTV following the victory at Villa Park, in which the Spaniard kept another clean sheet, David revealed he hopes to play plenty more games for the Reds in the years to come.

As you can see in our interview, David was delighted to break a longstanding club record on Thursday...

"Sorry to Schmeichel,” said David with a smile. “It's great. That means I've been here a long time and I've been playing really, really well to the top level so I'm really, really proud. I'm happy to play for this club for that many games.

“Hopefully I have another 400 games coming! So I'm really really happy."

De Gea now sits behind only one man, Alex Stepney, in the all-time appearances chart for United goalkeepers.

After four straight victories, the Reds go up against Southampton in our next game on Monday, in what could be De Gea’s 400th match for the club. However, despite a strong recent run of results, the keeper knows it will be another tough test.

"Of course we are very confident now but we haven't done anything yet. We have some important games coming now so we need to be very, very focused and keep the level that we showed today and in the last four games.

He added “We're in a good mood, a good way, so yes, we keep looking forward to the next game."

Here's what happened last time we played at Villa Park...

The win at Villa included some impressive finishes from outside the area by both Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba, with Villans goalkeeper - and David’s compatriot - Pepe Reina given little chance to keep either effort out.

“I think Pepe had some people in front and the finish was very good. They were great goals and I hope they can keep this level of goals. The kid [Mason] is playing really well and the whole team as well.”
