The Debate: Keane's influence as United captain

Friday 21 July 2023 08:00

Roy Keane will go down as one of Manchester United's greatest-ever players to pull on the famous captain's armband.

Winning twelve trophies across a decorated twelve year spell at the Theatre of Dreams, the former Republic of Ireland international departed for Celtic back in 2005.

With the anniversary of his signing in 1993 having just passed, MUTV's Sam Homewood asked the panel on this week's episode of The Debate if the United legend was the greatest to ever sport our armband.

Former Reds full-back Denis Irwin was quick to praise Keane, recalling memories of their early days spent together.

To help mark 30 years since Roy signed for the Reds, The Debate panel discuss his influence with the armband...

"He was an incredible signing, he really was," began Irwin. "I remember when he first came in, the team were going on pre-season to South Africa.

"I played late into June with Ireland with Roy and I wasn't supposed to go, but because we signed Roy I ended up going and all we did for five days was run. Just running.

"Fast forward 30 years and we had about twelve-and-a-half great years out of him."
With former United captain Robson also in attendance on this week's penal, Denis was quick to draw comparisons between the two, insisting both shared a very similar skillset.

"He was very much like the man sat next to me (Bryan Robson), he started off as a box-to-box player, could score a rake of goals and ended up playing as a holding midfield player with an incredible intelligence," added Irwin.

''He also read the game very, very well. [He was] really aggressive fantastic captain and definitely one one of the best in in United's history."
