United have the most wins across Europe in 2022/23

Tuesday 21 February 2023 13:31

A statistic doing the rounds on social media this week shows the incredible impact Erik ten Hag has made at Manchester United this season.

The Reds have been in stellar form, particularly since the World Cup in Qatar, with the unlucky 3-2 loss at Arsenal in January our only defeat in recent months.

That recent run has helped us climb to third in the Premier League table, five points behind the Gunners, as well as secure a place in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

We’re still in the Europa League, with the second leg against Barcelona to come, while West Ham United await in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round.

Even with all this in mind, it may still surprise some fans to learn that, when all competitions are taken into account, United have actually won more games than any other side across the top-five European leagues this season.

Ten Hag’s men have claimed victory in 27 of our 38 matches in the Premier League, Europa League, Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup – already seven more than we recorded in the whole of a disappointing 2021/22.

That figure of 27 beats anything the rest of England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain can conjure, with Thursday’s opponents Barcelona and Real Madrid next up on 26.

Serie A leaders Napoli and Ligue 1 frontrunners Paris Saint-Germain have 25 victories so far in 2022/23, while Manchester City and Arsenal boast 24 and 23 wins respectively.

The statistic is even more remarkable considering that we lost our first two outings of the campaign, to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, back in August.

Since then, bar the odd setback, United have been hugely consistent in the top flight.

After beating Liverpool 2-1 to get off the mark in our third game, we’ve actually claimed more points than any other side, with 49 to Arsenal’s 48.
