What’s happening at United this week?

Monday 04 April 2022 07:00

The first week of April is a busy one at Manchester United, with five fixtures on the schedule for our Men's Team, Under-23s and Under-18s.

Ralf Rangnick's side travel to Everton on Saturday, while the U23s and the U18s both have two matches each to contend with across the next seven days. After Sunday's WSL match against Brighton, Marc Skinner will see many of his United Women squad join up with their national teams ahead of a fortnight of international fixtures.

In addition, there are a few notable dates and anniversaries that we will be celebrating as the week progresses.

Here is everything you need to know about the next seven days at United…

The Under-23s will play their first league match since an 18 March victory over Everton at Old Trafford.

MONDAY

The U23s begin the week with a journey to Leicester City in the Premier League 2, knowing that a big victory could see them rise to third in the league.

Kick-off is at 19:00 BST, and you can keep up to date with the key moments on ManUtd.com and the United app, where team news, half-time and full-time updates will be posted.

Monday marks the anniversary of Duncan Edwards's United debut. The midfield maestro made his first team bow against Cardiff City in 1953. He would play a further 176 matches before his tragic death two weeks after the Munich Air Disaster.

It will also be four years since the death of another wonderfully-gifted midfielder, Ray Wilkins. Our thoughts will be with Ray's family.

TUESDAY

The U18s are in action on Tuesday, hosting Sunderland in the U18 Premier League. Kick-off is at 13:00 BST, and the match is being broadcast live on MUTV. Updates and reaction can also be found on ManUtd.com and the United app.

On this day in 2009, Federico Macheda scored that goal to seal a last-minute 3-2 win for United over Aston Villa.

WEDNESDAY

United Women striker Signe Bruun celebrates her 24th birthday on Wednesday. Happy birthday Signe! Speaking to the matchday programme ahead of Sunday's game against Brighton, Signe reviewed her first two months at the club.

"It's been really good," she said. "The girls and the club have been really good at taking me in and making me a part of the club really fast, and obviously the fans as well."

THURSDAY

Thursday marks four years since the Reds recorded an impressive 3-2 win away to Manchester City. Current United midfielder Paul Pogba scored a two-minute double on that day to level the score, before a late Chris Smalling goal sealed the three points and bragging rights.

This day was also the date of Denis Law’s final match for the club in 1973, having scored 237 goals in 404 appearances at the club.

It is also the date of United’s 1-1 draw with Juventus in the 1999 Champions League semi-final first leg. Ryan Giggs’ equaliser proved vital as the Reds won the second leg to set up a final against Bayern Munich.

United U23s play their second fixture of the week on Friday evening, hosting Chelsea at Old Trafford (19:00 BST). Supporters are encouraged to attend and support the young Reds. Those who can't will be able to keep up to date with teams and in-match coverage on ManUtd.com and our app.

SUNDAY

On this day in 1993, stalwart centre-back Steve Bruce scored two late goals to earn United a momentous win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
