Voting open for December 2020 Player of the Month

Wednesday 30 December 2020 15:00

Who do you think has been Manchester United's best player in December 2020?

That's the question we're asking users of our Official App, after another encouraging month domestically for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Although defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig saw us drop out of the Champions League and into the Europa League, there's a semi-final to look forward to in the new year, with the Reds knocking Everton out of the Carabao Cup two days before Christmas.

We're also hitting our stride in the Premier League, beating West Ham United, Sheffield United, Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers and securing credible draws with Manchester City and Leicester City to sit second going into 2021.

There were several brilliant individual performances throughout the month, including Scott McTominay's Lothar Matthaus-like display against Leeds and Edinson Cavani's late show at Goodison Park.

But here are the three Reds up for our final monthly accolade of 2020...

How Fernandes created eight chances v West Ham

As a sub at West Ham in 2020/21, Bruno set a Premier League record for chances created from open play...

BRUNO FERNANDES

Are you even surprised anymore? The Portuguese midfielder is aiming to win this award for the sixth time out of nine since making his debut in February, and has every chance after yet another stellar month...

Appearances: 9

Goals/assists:
 4/4

Best game: Take your pick. Bruno scored twice against Leeds and lit up the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day, but for sheer influence on a game, it would have to be West Ham right at the start of the month, when Fernandes came on as a half-time substitute and helped us recover from a goal down to win 3-1. He created eight chances from open play, the most of any half-time substitute in the Premier League.

Key stat: No Premier League player had more direct goal involvements than Bruno Fernandes (32) in 2020.

FRED

He may not rack up Bruno's impressive numbers in front of goal (frankly, who does?), but Fred has become Solskjaer's go-to midfield man in the big games...

Appearances: 4

Goals/assists:
 0/0

Best game: After blotting his copybook slightly with a red card against PSG, Fred slotted back into the side seamlessly for the Manchester derby, helping to keep Kevin De Bruyne largely quiet. But it was his tour-de-force display, in combination with McTominay, versus Leeds that really caught the eye. The Brazilian dominated the middle of the park, pressing ferociously and establishing the platform on which we'd go on to record an impressive 6-2 victory.

Key stat: Fred completed more passes (35) and won back possession more often (10 times) than any other Red during the Leeds win, while none of our players managed more tackles (five) or blocks (two).

The last time we played Leeds, the two sides shared eight goals between them...

MARCUS RASHFORD

Like Fernandes, Rashford already has one Player of the Month award to his name this season and is in the running once again...

Appearances: 9

Goals/assists:
 6/2

Best game: His brace at Bramall Lane proved key in keeping Sheffield United at bay, while the opener at Leicester was Rashford's 50th Premier League goal. But we can't look beyond the 93rd-minute winner at home to Wolves.

Key stat: Only Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo have reached a half-century of Premier League goals for United at a younger age than Rashford.
