United Women's first 100 games: The key statistics

Wednesday 09 March 2022 12:30

Manchester United Women played a landmark game when facing Leicester City at the weekend - the 100th competitive fixture since the team's formation in 2018.

The Reds marked the occasion in perfect style too, picking up all three points in the WSL with an emphatic 4-0 win over Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village.

Founding player and current captain Katie Zelem, who twice scored direct from corners against the Foxes, said afterwards: “I’m delighted with the goals today, I’m buzzing for the win and our 100th competitive game.”

To mark our women's team reaching treble figures in the matches played column, we're looking into the key numbers involved in our first century of fixtures, as follows...

GAMES

Matches: 100
Won: 64
Drawn: 12
Lost: 24

Ella Toone has missed just four games since the start of the 2018/19 season and therefore currently leads the way in our all-time appearances chart on 96, while captain Zelem is just behind her on 92. Marc Skinner has been our manager for the 23 most recent matches, after Casey Stoney was in charge for the first 77.

GOALS

Scored: 258
Conceded: 87

The Reds have scored an average of 2.58 goals per game while conceding less than an average of one per outing at the other end. Just like in the appearances chart, Toone leads the way, with 39 to her name – seven of which have come this season.

CLEAN SHEETS

Total: 50

United achieved a 50th shut-out in exactly 100 matches with Saturday’s 4-0 victory at home to Leicester. It was goalkeeper Mary Earps’s 27th clean sheet for the club and she tops the table in that regard, ahead of former Reds stopper Siobhan Chamberlain who remarkably kept 19 in 27 appearances during the 2018/19 campaign.

FREQUENT OPPONENTS

Manchester City (10 times)
Everton (9)
Tottenham Hotspur (8)

Having faced crosstown rivals City four times across three different competitions this season, there have now been 10 Manchester derbies in total, making the Blues our most frequent opponent so far. Everton follow closely on nine, and Tottenham Hotspur are one meeting further back - they are the only team that we have played in every one of our league seasons to date, as they were also promoted from the Championship at the end of 2018/19.

RECORD WIN

Aston Villa 0 United 12 (9 September 2018)

Our highest-scoring victory across the 100 games was our first-ever league outing, and third competitive match overall. Following ties against Liverpool and Reading in the League Cup, the Reds put 12 goals past Villa without reply at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground on our Championship debut, with Jess Sigsworth netting five. Our biggest home win stands as an 11-1 thrashing of last Saturday’s opponents Leicester back in November 2019.
