Marcus Rashford scores against Brighton

Vote for United's best goal of September!

Friday 02 October 2020 15:01

After a difficult start to the 2020/21 season, Manchester United have bounced back well – and with a flurry of goals, too.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team have scored three times in each of the last three matches, while seven different players have netted already (if we include Paul Pogba's deflected free-kick against Brighton).

When you factor in the goals scored by the other trio of teams we cover on ManUtd.com and in the Official App, it means there is plenty of competition when it comes to our first Goal of the Month award for this season.

Scroll down to see which 10 goals are up for the prize, and don't forget to watch our video of the contenders to refresh your memory. Once you've done that, be sure to cast your vote via our Official App...

We have 10 Goal-of-the-Month contenders for September, but which will you vote for? Watch them all now...

LEAH GALTON V CHELSEA (WOMEN)

What a way to start our list. United's first goal of the WSL season was a corker, and against the champions, no less. A sweeping team move involving several players cut Chelsea apart, and was neatly finished when Leah Galton tucked home Jackie Groenen's low centre.

HANNIBAL V SALFORD CITY (UNDER-21S)

United coasted to a 6-0 win against League Two side Salford City in the opening round of the EFL Trophy, and Hannibal's first-half strike was arguably the pick of the bunch. The move looked to be over when the Ammies cleared, but James Garner picked up the loose ball and, once Hannibal had made space, his unerring shot into the top of the net left the goalkeeper with no chance.

KATIE ZELEM V BIRMINGHAM (WOMEN)

When you see the name 'Katie Zelem' pop up on this kind of list, you've already got a fair indication of what kind of goal we're talking about. The midfielder does everything in the game with kilos of class, and this free-kick against Birmingham was no different. It's almost shocking how easily she caresses the ball over the wall and into the net, but then you remember it's Zelem, and therefore par for the course.

DONNY VAN DE BEEK V CRYSTAL PALACE

What an impact former Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek has made since arriving at the club. He always contributes something, whether starting the match (Brighton in the Carabao Cup) or coming on in the dying minutes (Brighton in the league). He wasted little time in notching his first United goal, too. Despite making his debut off the bench in the defeat to Crystal Palace, he took just 13 minutes to calmly slide home this delicious maiden strike for the Reds.

MARCUS RASHFORD V LUTON

Marcus's first strike of the season was a simple finish, but came at the end of a sublime and intricate team move, involving Fernandes, Fred, Rashford himself and then Greenwood, before Marcus applied an emphatic conclusion. Watch it back, and it just gets better and better with each viewing.

MASON GREENWOOD V LUTON

You have to feel for defenders facing up to Mason Greenwood sometimes. You never know which way the boy is going to shift it: onto his deadly left foot, or onto his almost identically deadly right? This time it was his left and, as usual with Mason, the devastating aspect is the economy. He makes it look so simple: make a yard, find a gap through the thicket of defenders, and then simply place the ball into a corner. It looks simple but, as anyone who's ever played football will know, making the game look this easy is preposterously difficult. Luton were the victims on this occasion, but they won't be the last in 2020/21.

CHARLIE MCCANN V LIVERPOOL (UNDER-23S)

You expect enthusiasm and bundles of skill from United's youth teams, but what was most impressive about this Charlie McCann strike was the poise shown by all the players involved. Anthony Elanga and Hannibal were both integral to the patient build-up and, when he burst into the box, McCann had the composure to work enough space to power home a impressive finish.

ALVARO FERNANDEZ V BURNLEY (UNDER-18S)

A stunning debut goal for our recent arrival from Real Madrid. Nothing looked on when the Spaniard received the ball towards the left of the penalty area and saw a rash of defenders blocking his path to goal. No bother. He simply pulled his right boot back and smacked a glorious, rising drive into the top corner.

MARCUS RASHFORD V BRIGHTON

The 10,000th goal in the club's history more than lived up to the billing. Sent clear into the Brighton half by Bruno Fernandes's sprawling pass, Marcus beat Ben White three times – eventually sending the Brighton defender into the grass – before smacking the ball home with his left foot. Sensational.

JUAN MATA V BRIGHTON

Juan's 50th goal for the club in all competitions summed up his class and intelligence as a player. He started the move in midfield, made a smart run into the box and then linked beautifully with van de Beek – who applied a deliciously deft flick – before coolly sliding the ball into the corner for United's second in a 3-0 win.

The more you watch it, the better Donny's assist looks, in the build-up to Juan's strike against the Seagulls...
