What's your favourite McTominay goal of 2020/21?

Wednesday 10 February 2021 14:49

Scott McTominay’s extra-time settler against West Ham was his seventh goal of 2020/21, making this the midfielder’s best goalscoring campaign yet at Manchester United.

Our no.39 had to wait until his 41st appearance for the club to open his account, but has been rapidly making up for lost time in the last couple of months.

His winner against the Irons was his third goal in as many games at Old Trafford, while the six most recent goals he has scored have come inside two months.

His rich goalscoring form and the different types of goals he has scored got us thinking – which was Scott's best strike of the season?

With close-range finishes, long-distance screamers and brave headers to choose from, it’s a tight call, so we’ve drafted in some opinions from several Reds within the media department.

LEEDS UNITED (first, Premier League)
selected by Steve Bartram (Features Editor)

Even though he was only seven years old when the seasonal double dose of United-Leeds acrimony ground to a halt, it’s fair to say – judging by his sensational opening to the game – that Scotty grasped the gravity of the fixture when it resumed in December. Little more than a minute had elapsed when Bruno Fernandes rolled the ball infield to the onrushing Scotland international, who sliced across his first-time shot to send it arcing powerfully and unstoppably into the bottom corner of the Scoreboard End goal. Had supporters been present, Old Trafford would have gone berserk.

LEEDS UNITED (second, Premier League)
selected by Sam Carney (ManUtd.com)

Scott’s emergence as a box-to-box, yard-devouring midfield monster was best encapsulated by his second goal in the 6-2 rout of Leeds, just prior to Christmas. In the short few seconds separating Luke Shaw’s throw and Anthony Martial’s through ball, Scott eats up a good 20 metres, powering beyond the Whites’ assorted – and notoriously tireless – runners, before checking himself, controlling it with his right and sweeping the ball, left-footed, into the bottom corner. McTominay? That afternoon, it was like watching Matthaus.

SOUTHAMPTON (Premier League)
selected by Adam Marshall (Contributing Editor, ManUtd.com)

There's something special about goals that happen so quickly that you're still revelling in one that has only just happened. Anthony Martial had put us five-up just moments before Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy beat out Mason Greenwood's shot in the 71st minute, and the ball was only partially cleared. Scott did so well to keep his first-time shot down and drilled it home with the precision of a master craftsman. It was low, on target and unstoppable and, for me, the point when a thumping win was transformed into a rout, with more to come in the closing stages!

WEST HAM (Emirates FA Cup)
selected by Joe Ganley (ManUtd.com)

For all his footballing qualities, one of the things I like best about Scott is his sheer desire. His willingness to do everything he can to help his team-mates; to fight for every ball, to make every last run. The winner against West Ham might not have been his best goal from a technical perspective, but it might go down as his most important so far this season. A lung-busting run, and an instinctive, expertly controlled first-time finish... classic McTominay. And you just know that the goal will mean so much more to him because it puts us within striking distance of Wembley.
