"They don't get beaten one-v-one"

Harry Maguire feels the scintillating form of our two full-backs, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, has been a big reason behind Manchester United's rise up the table this season.

The pair have featured in 19 and 21 league matches respectively this term, with Alex Telles, Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams also covering well when called upon.

Not only have Shaw and Wan-Bissaka impressed in defence, it's their attacking abilities which have caught the eye. In fact, Shaw is the best chance-creator in the league from the full-back position in 2021 and we've seen both create a number of important goals; indeed Shaw crossed for his fellow full-back to net our opening goal in our incredible 9-0 win over Southampton last week.

Our skipper recently spoke to us about the performances of the duo and he was full of praise for both team-mates.

Ole: Greenwood has matured immensely

The boss says the 19-year-old is close to top form once again, after an impressive display against Everton.

"Obviously Luke and Aaron have been excellent of late," he declared. "They’ve really picked up their attacking game and started to fly forward and create chances which is really important for the team.

"We know how big an influence full-backs in the modern day have on the attacking side of the game, as well as the defensive side. First and foremost they’re defenders for us and I’ve got to say they’ve been brilliant on that side of things. They don’t get beaten one-v-one which is really important, they’re stopping crosses and they’ve been defending the back post really well.

"As a back four we’re working hard together. I have big demands on my full-backs, I expect them to fly forward but I also expect them to fly back as well. Luke has been great and Aaron was great at Arsenal last weekend and it’s really important that they keep up this form to help the team."
David De Gea recently described Shaw as a real "weapon" for the side and when pressed further on the 25-year-old's quality, Maguire spoke in glowing terms of his fellow left-sided defender.

"We’ve built this relationship of playing down the left together and I think we’ve got a lot better during the season. I have great demands on Luke, I’m probably on him all the way through games and he’ll tell you the same [smiles], but I demand him to be one of the best players on the pitch each week because he’s got every attribute to be able to do that," explained Harry.

The boss speaks about trophies, home advantage and Jesse Lingard, ahead of Tuesday’s FA Cup tie…

"He’s fast, he’s strong, he’s good on the ball and he can create chances for us, and he’s started to really show that in recent weeks. It’s great for the team that he’s playing this way. His mentality is great, he’s staying fit and working hard, and I think the gaffer has spoken about his fitness levels which have gone through the roof this season.

"It’s really important for him to keep doing what he’s been doing because he has every attribute to be a top, top left-back and he’s really been showing that in recent months."
