When do United play Luton Town at Kenilworth Road?

Thursday 15 June 2023 16:59

When Manchester United's 2023/24 Premier League fixtures were announced on Thursday morning, naturally fans will have looked towards the clashes with our rivals and the games around the festive period, along with the Reds' opening and closing matches.

However, one encounter that will have particular historic significance is United's away trip to Kenilworth Road, to face Luton Town.

The last time the Reds came up against the Hatters in the league was in 1992, just before the Premier League's inception, and since their relegation that year, Luton never returned to the top-flight.

However, in 2022/23, the Bedford-based outfit defeated Coventry City on penalties in the Championship play-off final to complete their fairy-tale nine-year journey from the National League to the Premier League.

The Reds' league schedule for next season has been released.

What it is does mean is that Kenilworth Road is a destination for each top-flight side in 2023/24, with renovation works already taking place at the home of the Hatters, ensuring it complies with Premier League rules.

United must wait until Saturday 17 February to make the trip to Bedfordshire, with Kenilworth Road being the only venue in the division next term that we haven't already played game at in the Premier League.

We did visit the ground in the third round of the League Cup in 2020, where we emerged 3-0 winners.

Turf Moor and Bramall Lane, home to Burnley and Sheffield United respectively, are grounds United have played Premier League fixtures at in recent years, and the Clarets are the first of the promoted trio that Erik ten Hag's side must face away from Old Trafford in 2023/24.

In our sixth fixture of the campaign, we will make the short trip north on Saturday 23 September, with former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany the man in charge of the 2022/23 Championship winners.

Our away clash against Sheffield United is pencilled in for Saturday 21 October, with Luton are the only promoted team set to play at Old Trafford before the turn of the year.

United's trip to Kenilworth Road in February is one that our fans in particular will look forward to, given the recent media attention the stadium's traditional character and aesthetic has received on the back of the Hatters' promotion to the top-flight.
