Reds to start on Monday for first time since 2012

Thursday 15 June 2023 09:00

Manchester United will begin the Premier League season on a Monday for the first time in over a decade, when Wolverhampton Wanderers visit Old Trafford in our opening fixture of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Reds have only raised the curtain on our league season on a Monday twice before, with mixed fortunes, while a Friday-night start back in 2018/19 is the only other occasion when we've kicked off our campaign on a weekday.

But when Wolves visit Old Trafford on 14 August, for a 20:00 BST kick-off, the count will go up by one.

When will the Reds play our rivals in 2023/24?

There are always fixtures that fans look out for first so we pick out some of the key battles ahead.

PREVIOUS MONDAY OPENERS

United 3 Newcastle 0 (16 August 2010)

Newcastle were the visitors to Old Trafford at the beginning of the 2010/11 season, and the Reds started what turned out to be a title-winning campaign in style.

Goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Fletcher gave Sir Alex Ferguson's side the advantage at the break, with Ryan Giggs putting the result beyond doubt in the 85th minute.

Javier Hernandez also made his home debut in this match.

Everton 1 United 0 (20 August 2012)

Just two years after our first-ever Monday Premier League opener, the Reds were pencilled in to travel to Goodison Park, where Everton lay in wait.

Both Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie made their United debuts, but a single goal from future Red Marouane Fellaini earned the Toffees all three points.

Despite this setback, Sir Alex's team would go on to win the Premier League title once more, with the Scot retiring at the end of the season and being succeeded by the man who had beat him on the opening day: Everton boss David Moyes.

ANOTHER ANOMALY

United 2 Leicester 1 (10 August 2018)

The only time we have opened a Premier League campaign on a Friday was in 2018, when Leicester were the visitors to the Theatre of Dreams.

Paul Pogba opened the scoring from the penalty spot, with just three minutes on the clock, before Luke Shaw's maiden Reds goal extended the lead to two late on.

Jamie Vardy grabbed a consolation, but United ran out winners and got the season off to a solid start.
