Writers' opinions: Our Goal of the Season

Wednesday 17 May 2023 15:06

Manchester United's Goal of the Season vote is under way, but which efforts on the shortlist stand out for our writers?

Whether it's Casemiro's header in the Carabao Cup final, or Alejandro Garnacho's first Premier League goal, away at Fulham, it could be argued that all 10 featured warrant attention.

The fans' votes will determine the victor, which will be announced at our awards evening on Monday 29 May, but our writers had differing views when discussing which meant the most to them.

Read on to see which goals our club journalists selected, and their reasoning behind the choice...

Antony v Arsenal (H)
By Sam Carney

Marcus Rashford, Wayne Rooney, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer… the list of United attackers who’ve scored on their debut is long and prestigious, but few can have opened their accounts in as fine a fashion as Antony.

Arsenal came to Old Trafford with a perfect record in the Premier League but that ended on a fine Sunday afternoon in Manchester, as our new Brazilian winger fired the spark.

Our no.21 remained cool and composed to sidefoot beyond the onrushing Aaron Ramsdale and, in isolation, the noise and celebrations that greeted Antony’s first goal for the club will live in the memory long after this season has concluded.

But the best thing about this goal – and the one that makes it a worthy candidate for this award – is the fact that every single one of the Reds’ 11 starters touched the ball in the build-up. A true team move.

Bruno Fernandes v Southampton (A)
By Joe Nelson

If we are selecting the best goal of the 2022/23 campaign solely on technical ability, it has to be Bruno's effort against Southampton in August. The way the Portuguese dynamo ran onto his compatriot Diogo Dalot's low cross and struck his volley sweetly, giving Gavin Bazunu no chance, was breathtaking.

Since his arrival at the club in 2020, Fernandes has developed a knack of scoring big goals, and this one was no different.

In a match which saw both sides giving very little away, it was crying out for a moment of pure quality, and, once again, our no.8 delivered. It would take you countless attempts to try to recreate that goal, and it gets better and better each time you watch it back.

Alejandro Garnacho v Fulham (A)
By Adam Marshall

The thought of waiting an age before seeing United play again, and stewing on dropped points against Fulham, filled me with utter dread. As the clock ticked down at Craven Cottage, something remarkable happened. When Christian Eriksen played a pass, Alejandro Garnacho appeared turbo charged when sprinting onto it and his finish was immaculate.

Once the obligatory wait to discover if VAR could find anything wrong with it was over, the shot of adrenaline and knowledge that we were heading into an unprecedented six-week break in the middle of a season on such a high, was more than welcome.

It was also the first league goal for our exciting teenager and provided further evidence of his enormous potential.

Marcus Rashford v Burnley (H)
By Mikey Partington

The World Cup break meant United supporters had to wait exactly 50 days to see Erik ten Hag’s side find the back of the net at M16 again, and because of that, even the scruffiest of goals would have been enjoyed vigorously on that cold winter’s night at Old Trafford. Our fans were treated though to two exceptional efforts, and the second of those, for me, simply has to be among the top picks for our men’s Goal of the Season prize.

Rashford carried the ball from inside the Reds’ half and was unstoppable as he weaved his way down the right flank and into the box, before powering accurately into the far bottom corner. Marcus made a difficult finish – at the end of a mesmerising run – look easy, and it would turn out to be the goal that kickstarted his incredible mid-season scoring streak, as the first of 10 goals in our 10 games straight after the winter tournament.
